Carb parts and availability etc

Post by cbx1260cc »

I am a new member and this is my First post so Please consider that when I ask:

I have the Opportunity to purchase a low mileage 1990 model that has been garaged for 4.5 yrs . Although the carbs were drained, oil changed, and the fuel tank filled with stabilizer added I fully realise this is a 1990 model bike and is after all 22yrs old.

To bring the bike back from its Deep Sleep will obviously require a few things to be done but one of the BIGGEST concerns I have is the carbs. The older a bike becomes the harder parts are to find for it/them and so that becomes a concern. The issue that is BIG in my mind is finding the rubber parts to rebuild the carbs. I'm expecting the rubber seals/diaphragms will need replacement as they have either hardened or rotted over time. So question becomes--Are these parts still available? How do current rubber pieces hold up to the crud they call Fuel these days with at Least 10% Ethanol added to it?

Is anyone making aftermarket parts to withstand the Ethanol blends (Viteon based rubber bits perhaps)?

My dilemma is--it might not make sense to buy a "deep sleep" model as I May never be able to wake it.

Will the experts chime in and offer suggestions/opinions??

Should I have these worries--or am I overreacting (sure hope so as it's such a nice bike I'd hate to walk away)

PLease provide input/opinions/suggestions.

With thanks to all,
Ricardo

since it sounds like it was tored properly it shouldnt have too many problems. I would look in the tank and make sure there isnt much rust and try hooking it up with some jumper cables and make sure it turns over and gets spark. If it sparks and cranks and has compression then I would pu some fuel with a little bit of fuel system cleaner in it and see if itll fire up. I just bought an 04 yzf600r that had been sitting for 4 years with fuel in it and all it needed was fuel system cleaner and a charge on the battery and now it runs great. If the price is right and the basics check out on it I would say go for it.

Carb kits are available as well if seals do need replacing. They range anywhere from about 80-100 for the set of 4 to replace all the seals. There are also enough used parts around to use. 600 carbs will work on the 400 so you have plenty of choices.

I say buy it!
