Snaking Fzr 400??? (dangerous to ride)

Post by Furbz »

hey guys,
i recently purchased a FZR 400 86 model.
its got 24000km on the clock. and runs fantastically.

however...

the bike doesnt track straight. it snakes its way down the road in a S pattern.

i have straightened the rear wheel to the swing arm. but it still snakes.

i am starting to think it might be the swing arm bearings?

if you guys have any ideas as to whats causing my snaking issue please help!

Cos currently the bike is actually quite dangerous to ride...

How many miles are on the tires?

Uneven wear. If the rims are unbalanced the tires may be getting to a point where they have worn unevenly.

Have you been able to raise the bike to check the swing arm movement side to side?

i dont think its uneven wear... but i will check it out...
wouldn't that be quite easy to feel when riding? as a bumpy ride?
my bike is rolling smoothly...

its hard to explain but it feels similar to pushing with your left hand slightly on the bars followed by your right hand... that sorta feel
you wouldnt feel happy taking your hands off the bars.

i have checked the headset and its smooth and not knocking. so pretty sure its not the headset.

i havent yet raised the bike, just struggling with time. but its the first thing i want to check...

hello, I had the same issue with my 600 once, i would suggest taking your rear wheel off and making sure all the peices are in their... in my bike i was missing a collar from when the previous owner had the tire changed... it must have fell out without them noticing anyway it made the ride extremely dangerous... here is a diagram with part names hope this helps you...

I don't know if it is dangerous but I would not ride it. Check your wheel bearings in the front. Does the "snaking" increase with speed?

its seems the bike is worse at slow speed than at hight speed. as i accelerate it still snakes just not as badly.
i think this is just the centrifugal force of the wheels that is helping mask the issue more than it 'getting better' as i go faster...

as for the front tire. its straight for sure...

Some one else had this problem very recently (within the last few weeks) and I covered the possibilities in that thread
