3tj forks

Post by 4003tj »

just put new oil seals in my forks thanks to a piece i read here http://www.fzrarchives.com/ipb/index.ph ... 22544&st=0 and also a piece on the wiki by yamaha george but am stuck as to how much oil to put in, yam say 80mm from the top without springs and tubes down but i've seen various other amounts ( most advice says 80mm will be soft) i got standard springs and 10wt oil though that can change, so what makes it harder more air or more oil ?

More oil means less air space.

The air space above the oil constitutes an air spring. Gas/air springs pressure rises exponentially.

So, to make it harder, you need more oil.

You can get in trouble going to far, tho..because if there is too much oil, the forks will bottom out on the oil (which is incompressible). This can blow the seals right out of the fork legs if bottomed hard, and will make the forks VERY harsh.

cheers for the input reelrazor
i've done the fork seals and gone with 495cc of 10wt to start with, as all the pdf service manuals i've seen so far state 433cc for the sp fully adjustable forks and 509cc for the normal rr forks, i though i'd go with a bit less and see how it goes, it's easier to add some later, than take equal amounts out of both forks.
now all i gotta do it get the thing running properly so's i can try out the forks banghead
