Anybody seen these? Help identify these fork dampers

Post by markd »

Hi All,
I'm new to the forum, thought I'd introduce myself. Mark from Los Angeles. Look forward to getting to know y'all. I posted this on the fzr archives, but haven't had any responses, somebody recommended this forum for more activity.

I got an 88-89 FZR 400 front end from a buddy to replace my bent stanchions. The legs have stickers that say "VARIABLE DAMPING" and a safety sticker about high pressure air inside. It has fork tube caps with air valves on them so you can add air to the tube. It also has some cartridge emulators, but they are not like the gold valve ones. they seem to be the same principle, but a different bulkier design, they look almost like a forerunner to the goldvalves. they are longer with a much bigger spring, but the same type of bottom, just not gold.

I was going to buy the gold valves and race tech springs, but if these work they'd save me a bundle.

Does anyone know anything about these? Do they work? I am interested in finding out about both the emulators and the air valves, if it works it would give another layer of tuneability. But if it worked, I might have heard of them...

thanks!

I've only seen similar to those on older Hondas like the old VFRs. Would not surprise me if they are from that era. Sorry I'm not much more help.

Welcome Mark!

They might be early versions that Race Tech put out years ago. You might want to send them the pic. If they didn't make them, they might know who did.

Hey Mark,

Good to see you over here!

Sweekster's comment jives with what DonTZ125 said about the RZ350 forks. Maybe these are indeed old OEM units from back in the day (from which bike, we don't know). If that's the case, you'll probably need to use the accompanying damping rods (which by extension means the accompany forks). I'm really thinking you may want to just get some Race Tech units and call it a day.

Yeah, That is probably going to be the way to go. Did Todd have any used ones? Anybody here have any they want to unload? Still waiting for the darn fork seals to get here so we can put it back together. Merry Christmas Everyone!
