FZ1 shock

good day,

hearsay says an FZ1 shock will bolt on without mods. please no hearsay.

has anyone actually seen it done with their own eyes? what year was shock? and no mods were req'd ?

i know an aftermarket shock is the way to go. that is why i like the idea of no mods...so later if i get my dream wish ohlins none of the stock parts on the bike will be messed up.

Someone here has done this swap into a 600. Should be the same thing to get it into a 400. I can not remember if it required modification or not. If it did, I think the mod can be done with a Dremel tool. PM the_finch. He was about to do this, but I do not know if he has completed it or not yet.

i have one on my bike...i didnt put it there though...I thought it was stock till i met up and looked at another fzrs shock.
mine has the stock fzr spring. I guess you need to grind down the spring alittle to get it to fit.

Early FZ1 shocks (2001-2003 If I remember) will bolt in BUT the spring has to be swapped out and replaced with the FZR spring. There is also a few millimeters of filing needed to be done for the FZR spring to seat correctly. Both TheFinch and Haunter are in the process of swapping in this shock. There is also the use of the 06 R6 shock as well. BWeight has done this on his 88 FZR400 with great results. I'd PM all 3 people I just mentioned for more info.

I got lazy and bought an R6 shock to try out, I needed new spring compressors to get teh fzr spring onto the FZ1 shock, and I had to grind the spring alot to get it to fit on the FZ1 shock.

I would almost recommend sending it off(esp if its been used alot) for a refresh and get a proper spring put on when you do to make it lots easier.

hell, throw another hundo down for a revalve while you are at it .

I actually do have the FZ1 shock on my 600 right now (400 should be the same).

The shock is almost 100% drop-in; I just had to use 3 washers (2 on one side, 1 on the other) to make up for the top being a little bit narrower. As for the spring, I went a different route, buying a Racetech FZ1 shock spring. Supposedly, the FZR spring will fit (haven't done it myself). My shock is a 2001, but everything I've read on the FZ1 forums and manuals says that 2001-2005 used the same shock.

I'll be posting up pics and instructions on how to adjust the shock and everthing in the next couple days here as a write-up.

thx all for the responses. a couple more brain picking questions - what race tech spring rate did you put on the FZ1 shock? i checked with racetech and found the stock FZ1 shock spring rate was 7.6 kg/mm. what spring rate did you install on your shock?

and i heard the fzr 600 is a stiffer spring than the 400, true? does anyone know the rate for a stock 600 spring (i happen to have one). best regards.

When I got my Racetech Spring, I got one with a 9.4 kg/mm springrate (I weigh in at 235 lbs.).

No clues on the stock FZR springrate yet.

FOUND: FZR400 10.0 kg/mm

now whats the fzr600 spring rate? if anyone has a factory manual for the 600 the spring rate can be found under specifications (look for detailed shock spec area) thanks all.
