Swingarm spool adapters? (1988 FZR400)

Post by architect »

Anyone know a way to get spools onto an '88 swingarm?

I've seen different aftermarket products for bikes with no tab to install spools on. I can't seem to find anyone making anything for the FZR400

Best might be getting a swingarm from a 3EN2 or 1990´s 3BF as they´ve already threads for the spools at the lowerside of the swingarm by default. Have a look at the Pictures of the 90´s 3BF in viewtopic.php?f=7&t=12752 and you will see soon...the other way is getting someone who is able to weld Aluminium properly and he should be able to attach some pieces of Aluminium to the swingarms lowerside for you in order to drill a fitting thread inside for the spools...

Edit:If you need Infos about the distance of the Deltaboxswingarms original Spoolmountingpoint from a 3BF or about the thickness of the Aluminium there in order to get the proper thickness added at the right place to your swingarm, then just ask..it´s no problem to do the measurements...

Just use an Abba stand, they're much better than a paddock stand (unless your in a race paddock using tyre warmers and no sidestand) more solid and with additional attachments you can lift the front wheel too. Easier to get the bike onto as well
Its the only stand you'll ever need

Thanks for the reply. The 3BF swing arm is a direct swap? Not easy to find one.

Abba stand would be nice, but I already have a rear stand with trolly attachment I'd like to use. I also don't want to have to drop another big money on either a swing arm or another stand. Thanks!

The 1990s 3BF(or 3FH which is the 3BF with EXUP) has got the same frame as the 1988 and 1989 Model if you have a look at the diagrams at http://www.cmsnl.com and all 3BF share the Frame with the first generation 1WG as far as i know, so the measurements there should also be the same and a direct swap should work. With the 2TK and 3EN1 i don´t know, maybe a bit different and then require a 3EN2 Deltabox Swingarm (which is obviously harder to find than a 3BF Deltabox due to the Number of produced Bikes)...

By 1988 you mean 3en1 ?
They were the only model with a braced swingarm.

By 1988 i mean the 1988s 3BF/3FH...the 3BF/3FH have got 3 Modelyears, 1988 (FZR 400U / FZR 400WUC) and 1989 (FZR 400W / FZR 400 SWC) which both look like first generation 1WG (FZR 400 Genesis from 1986) and the Black/Blue 1990 Model ( FZR 400A / FZR 400 SAC) with 4 Caliper Frontbrakes and Deltabox-Swingarm....The Second 1WG based FZR 400 with Deltabox-Swingarm and spoolholder Threads attached to it was the 1989 3EN2 as far as i know, the 3EN1 didn´t have these ...

I was kinda asking the OP - it's good to know what you're dealing with before thinking about a solution. If he doesn't want to buy an Abba or change the swingarm, (lets face it you'd go for something with a 17" rear) then as you said he's going to have to have some bar welded on, and then threaded. If he did have a 3en1 the bracing of the swingarm would foul if you changed the shock for an R6 unit ... just planning for the future ....

Those spool adapters are really nice ideas. I wish I made my living in metal instead of wood so I could make everybody a set : )

On the other hand, that ABBA stand looks awesome! Does anyone know if they have adapters to fit the FZR400 W? They only list a FZR400RR.

Abba do lots of fitting kits - they go into the swingarm pivot and fit over the nut or bolt bolt head. You can get a second kit which allows fitting to the footrest hanger bolts, so you can remove the swing arm. It makes putting a bike on the stand simple and easy too, a lot girls buy them for that reason. When they're on the stand you can stand on the foot pegs and the bike is rock solid, they're loved over here in the UK

Yeah they really look great and perfect for cleaning the bike too. The FZR400W rear is so narrow compared to modern swing arms that finding a paddock stand that fits it was even a challenge :/ My PitBull stand just barely makes a connection under the swing arm and I worry about it every time I use it.

I emailed ABBA to see if they make a kit for the 88-90 FZR400 W. The 400RR they list is a very different bike and frame. Their eBay store doesn't confirm fit either.

I tried to quickly look into it but it doesn't appear there is one for the 1988 1WG either. It's also not going to be ship to get it over to Canada.

ABBA tech replied to my inquiry about the FZR400 W stand.
They said they don't make one currently, but are more than happy to make the required adapters if I send them some detailed pics and measurements....which I will do : )

I didn't mean to hi-jack this thread, but the ABBA stand does seem to be a superior solution to somehow adding spools to the 1WG's. With the option to get the front wheel off the ground too, I don't see any drawback to the ABBA stand. If they can't make one I'll just order the standard stand and have my own adapters made. It looks really simple. : )

How do you secure the bike so both front and back are lifted on the stand? Looks like it'll pivot back and forth.
