New battery won't fully charge
have a brand new battery after 5 days it goes dead and wont fully recharged will disconnect battery and charge separately just wondering what the issue could be I heard before another posts about a rectifier could this be an issue that would not allow the battery to fully charge on its own. new member of the site lots of great info

Re: New battery won't fully charge
Either your VRR has failed low (annoying, but much better than failing high and frying your electrical system), or your stator has failed, or some aspect of the wiring / connectors has dismantled itself. Let us know what you get when you:
- 1. Measure the DC voltage across the battery terminals at 3-5k rpm
2. Measure the AC voltage across each combination of the white wires at the VRR (1-2, 1-3, 2-3)

Re: New battery won't fully charge
thanks for the reply much appreciated I'm guessing voltage relay regulator vrr I will do the check up many thanks. I put a new battery in lithium and she fired up in worked like a charm. I figure in the long run it will happen to the new battery as well so I will check all the good stuff mentioned

Re: New battery won't fully charge
is the regulator the hitachi barrel shaped device behind the battery box

Re: New battery won't fully charge
That's either the fuel pump (hoses) or the starter solenoid (heavy red wires). The VRR is behind the left seat panel, back by the tail light. Look for 3 white wires and a red wire going into a 4-way plug.

Re: New battery won't fully charge
your adaptor harness allows for a newer regulator part is that correct. thanks for walking me through this

Re: New battery won't fully charge
located the rectifier and she is in great shape will do the electrical test tomorrow. are you local Scarborough Ontario do you have any adaptors in stock and you have any rectifiers perhaps I can pick up both items from you if you have them. Or best price retailer for new rectifier

Re: New battery won't fully charge
I'm down by Warden station. I JUST sold my last one, and I'm waiting on more connectors from my connector connection.
I don't sell VRRs, but I have no reason to distrust any of the folks selling 'new' on eBay.

Re: New battery won't fully charge
checked battery voltage at 3500rpm and was down 13.5......should be 14.3 ...15.3
checked the 3 white wires off the stator...they are located under the gas tank under a plastic cup against the frame.
measured in ohm . wires 1.2 and 1.3 the they were bang on the the high limit 0.66 to 0.44
as mentioned in the repair manual replacing the regulator.
thanks for pointing me in the right direction don

Re: New battery won't fully charge
Did you measure the AC voltage across the white wires at 3-5k?

Re: New battery won't fully charge
I will.
No mention in the manual about voltage across white wires.
makes sense to try.

Re: New battery won't fully charge
No, it's not in the manual - but it is one of the checks I suggested in a previous post. Measuring a ridiculously small resistance - which many meters can't register anyway - doesn't necessarily prove anything. Checking for 30-60vac across all three phases is an absolute confirmation as to whether the stator is actually generating the needed electricity.

Re: New battery won't fully charge
I'd be the last guy on earth to go against Don, but I would think that 13.5V should be more than enough to charge the battery.
I'm thinking more along the lines of a parasitic battery drain.
