FZR600 fighter build

Post by JRK5892 »

Hey guys, have you bear with me on this one... i build choppers, bobbers, harleys, and cafes. but have always wanted a rocket. so i got this one... time to make it my own. i am going to have a ton of questions i am sure. i do custom powder coating and paint so that is the easy part... the rest we will have to see

OK... here we go, here is what i have planned.
first, i am going to tear the wheels off, get the rubber out, and bearings pulled. using this powder on the wheels, it is the match for Vett's burn orange but with a bit of flake... this will be my main accent color on the bike, only the wheels, radiator, overflow, and a few other small odds and ends will get hit with this... everything else will be very dark and flat
Image

everything else for the most part is going to get hit with this color, it is a powder we just love! basicly a semi gloss satin flat black (ya never saw those words togheter to describe a color huh)
Image

for the plastics. First the headlight i am going to cut the brackets that the PO made and clean up all the welds, then i am going to tuck this as close into the trees as i can possibly get it
all the plastic i am going to bust out the air brush... will get sanded, primed, then silver base coat, from there i will airbrush carbon fiber on the whole thing, tank, rear cowl, wind guards (off a touring harley and i am going to make them work), and headlight... down the center of the tank and flat portion on the rear of the cowl, i am going to ghost in skulls, and use a candy orange to accent them and add a bit of color, that all gets burried in clear

front forks, i am going to make full covers for them, i am too cheap to convert to inverted forks (would be nice but cheap and fast on this one) so i am going to take some 3 in exhaust pipe, cut that and basicly sleeve the forks, down tubes will be shot to match the frame, cover in the flat black above.

the frame is either going to get shot in the appliance paint silver, or a wrinkle black... not sure yet cause the engine is staying in the frame on this one! so that sucker is going to stay silver ill just clean the hell out of it, the engine cases will get that black above... i may do the frame in a flat silver but i am not sure yet
trees will be done in the flat black
Go! is getting my seat to recover, do not care what she does, just want something cool
will figure out the under tail as i go, but the over flow on the radiator is going away and being placed on the frame rails in the bottle i am making for it
got new tires, exhaust is almost done (still need to figure out what i am going to do with the can, i do not want to shorten it or mess with that at all, the bike has a jet pro kit in it and runs like a rape ape!)

the whole thing is going down 3 inches... ya i know alot right, but my wife is a shorty and she would flip if she could not ride it... i am sure there will be a bunch of changes but i want to get this in and out fast! i got another harley to build (MINE)

Ill post up my "lift" for the bike tonight... ha ha ha wait till you see how i suspend rockets in the shop, ghetto a bit yes, but super solid and easy to work on them this way!

here are some shots of the bike as it is now (with my new tank cowl on it!)
Image

my biggest pet peeve NO UNDERTAIL, have to fix that!

(top: V&H header that i have coated in high temp gloss black, Left: bottle that i will make my radiator over flow, middle: hand guards, Lower left: new front gear *more off the line*, Lower right: 3.5 lazer cut dog bones, will drop the bike 1 in, 2in, or 3.5 in the rear)

I have worked on rockets before, but not much, here is the last one i built

it is already painted black right now, just a horrible job! i think i am going to go with a gun metal, i can color match any color with powder in the shop so i will be able to color match that for the rear sets and some other odds and ends. i have to keep some silver to tied in the motor. plus the base coat on the carbon fiber i am going to air brush is silver... I lay black all day every day, everyone wants to black out their bikes, i want to do something diff on this one, i have a all blacked out bobber already. Most of the newer rocket frames are all black, so i want this frame to stand out a bit, i almost was going to tear it all down last night and powder the frame in the orange... but the wife reminded me, i got 4 other builds that are ground up going on right now, i do not have the time, i want this sucker road ready by the end of Jan

but who knows, when i heat up the spray booth to lay the paint i may get pissed and end of tearing the motor out, i was even thinking of doing the frame in a textured paint like a hammer or wrinkle. think that would look good? i would do that in black...huh

well after some hunting i figured out how i am going to deal with the rear of the bike, found this online and love the look, it is stock cut down
Image

well did not get much done cause of class tonight, but was playing with some metal in the shop, and think i may have about solved my fork cover mission, some fork boots will be behind the covers but this is kind of what i am going for, also remember that these will be powdered not chrome
since i am too cheap to do an inverted front end, this is how i will dress that up a bit

before:
Image

After: (i am still going to move them up a bit, and when i weld my brackets to the trees the shiels will completely cover the tubes... I like it)

I've got:
Stator cover (although it's a lil beat up. No cracks though.)
radiator
valve cover
levers
brake light

I may be able to find some pads, not sure how used they are though.
Swingarm bearings are listed in the wiki and you can get them from a local bearing warehouse just south of Elk Grove Village. They take about a day to get them and you can pick them up or have them shipped.
Fork Seals and dust boot combos abound on ebay. I recently had to pick up 4 sets of them for a massive fork party rebuild. They run about 27 shipped I think it was for the set.
Gaskets can be had from ebay for complete motor sets for 75 I think I paid for mine. If you are looking for individual ones I prefer http://www.partshark.com/fiche_select.asp as they tend to have the lowest prices. Shipping can take some time though.

Headlight ears you are better off machining your own as paying 45 each for them is silly. A lot of places are doing them out of Delrin now too so machining is a lot easier if you have a mill or nice drill press.

Good luck.

Man, what do you guys do about your guages? i am trying to tuck that street fighter headlamp/fairing in close in the tubes, and make some fork ears to support it, however the guage pod is just too big, so i thought about cutting the tank and frenching the guages right into the tank, but there is not enough room without hacking the air box up?
any ideas? or do i have to mount that fairing way out like that to run the stock guage set up?

Not once have i seen a decent looking FZR fighter that kept the stock gauges. In any configuration except maybe frenched into the tank cover, but I personally dont like that setup. My gauge is mounted on my triple and is as low as I would like it. Any lower and it would take a significant movement of my head to see it, which would lose view of the road for a second.

well for now, i think i will powder the bracket i got for it, i was able to shave it down and move it all in closer to the trees by 1 inch, so for now, that is going to work... if i come up wiht a slicker creation further down the line i will go with that, for now. what i got will have to work

If you move the stock clocks in the brake banjo will foul them where it mounts on the reservoir.
