headlight options

Post by shredex »

im going to be making my own front for my unvolunteery fighter.
I need to know of some lights that will work.

and if anyone has any experience or knows of some links to help me build my own front fairings then please let me know.

im planning on using foam and cutting to the shape I want then fiberglassing over it to make the front fairing and Ill go from there

I applaud your ambition to make a new front fairing, but what's wrong with the R1 stuff you have on now?

Edit: Nevermind I saw your other post, I think your best bet would be to get some plastex and repair it rather then geting a new front fairing, there's a plastic welder on the board as well - can't remember who though

I do plastic welding. but there is just parts that broke off and have lost on the upper that it would just be much easier to get a new one...maybe ill find a way to fix it though...

Geo.
what is this hard modelers foam?
and the wax stuff you speak of?
I was just going to get this cheap craft foam thats green that they use in crafts to put fack flower stems into.
its sandable, but its just so weak that you can push a dent into it...but if Im careful ill be fine.
i think ill coat the inside of the mold with bondo or something to make it strong.
i have this blue liquid stuff that drys to a latax that was giving to me to put on stuff before i fiberglassed it to make it not stick to the mold.

If you think fixing your existing fairings is too hard or time consuming, then making your own fairings is out of the question. There is a lot invloved and materials will cost you a lot more than you think. If you're really serious, there are some good youtube videos out there on mold making.

It is rather like the green foam for flower arranging but denser and less prone to denting can be machined on a miller or hand cut (breadknife) and sanded although that is ONE MESSY process.

and the wax stuff you speak of?
Canuba wax or mould wax is super slippery but soft to put on Plaster of parris or bondo..
I had problems with Bondo on the foam as the heat from the "cure off" effected the foam and goes real hard real quick and you can get damage to the foam underlay when trying to remove bondo hence the use of plaster (again a rather dusty job )

yea, the green faom stuff I can get is very "moldable"
I can take my finger and rubb off the little fibers and sand it like that lol
when working with the stuff, the dust get everywhere.

as for the blue stuff, Ill get the name after work today cuz I got it from my painter who is in the shop across from us

hey shred..gotta surfboard shop near you?

One that makes/shapes boards will have lots of scraps of surfboard foam which is more like the stuff Geo is talking about.

Hell, it's meant to be wrapped in 'glass.

i found this other white faom in walmart in the crafts section I might use...its less dusty but still stiff and it seems like it will be millable and cuttable and sandable and everything.
im gonna use it to make an undertail as well so I no longer have that campain sign stuck under there as a shield

Theyre also not DOT approved and can have legality issues. But I second the fact thay they suck for headlights.

well, I got the lights and I just screwed one into the part of the lower triple that has the two screw holes that are there for no reason in the front...the lights not that bad, drove all night with it.
compared to the r1 headlight i had running (lets say that was a ten) i give the little light a 7.5-8.5

anyways, I have no clue how im going to make the fighter front fairing work, im gonna give the dude with the zx9 a call because i remember he told me he got his fighter headlight front for his bike....
