Tomgun's Ducati cowl, 56k warning

Post by Target30 »

Ok, here we go again, gonna do it a different way this time, use the seat, and form the fiber over it, just gonna post some pics, let Tom do the commentary...

We saran wrapped the seat, then dict taped it, forgot to put some vaseline on it, but it should still come off, hoefully!

Tom duct taping

I put the first coat of resin on, Tom is ready to lay the first layer of fiber
Image

and its down
Image

here i am soaking the first layer of glass
Image

and a stupid face
Image

my wife could not get my daughter to go to sleep, so after the first layer, and starting the second, Tom finished up while i took care of the little girl
Image
Image

finished 2 layers, gonna take a while to set up. Tom put it in the back of his suv to take home

After this Tom got to watch me go crazy watching the Celtics go to triple overtime in chicago, only to lose, will have to work a game over the weekend now, game 7, bummer. more to come, stay tuned!
I did that.

Fiberglass is not as hard as one would think. Definitely pays to prep everything first. Have a plan, don't forget the beer, and the materials needed. Whilst on my way to Jim's house, I stopped by Home Depot for some cheap paint brushes. Never even thought to pick up the other essential stuff like beer, woman, oh and the fiberglass.. :duh: Then driving around the small sleepy typical New England town Jim lives in to find that AutoZone was closed. Double Duh!! :duh: Luckily Jim had the stuff.. So as I write this the seat cowl is hardening.

The next order of business is to trim the edges and remove it from the seat to create a retention lip. Sand, bondo and do the final finish. More pictures to come... Note to self.. driving around with freshly fiberglassed parts can make you very "High" :tard:

Are you only putting on two layers of the cloth? Cuz thats not going to be very strong. Get some fiberglass mat and apply atleast two more layers on the inside if you can.

2 layers will be fine as long as there is some way to latch it to keep it down. I suppose you already know that though.

Just another update to the seat cowl project. Seat cowl fiberglass has cured enough. I have trimmed the edges and refitted and shaped it to prepare for the third layer of fiberglass. This is were I'm going to build up the bottom edge to create a retention lip to the underside of the cowl to keep it in place. Also to build it up more for more strength. The project continues.......

hey, how easily did it come off the seat? and how smooth is the glass on top. careful adding glass to the underside, as it was formed to almost the exact size of the seat, so adding to the bottom will make it tight on the seat.
I did that.

It came off fairly easy. I was able to peel off the rest of the duct tape. Top came out pretty smooth. After it all dried I was able to put it back on after to see how well it fit. I'm going to build it up with cardboard to create the retention lip. I left a little extra material on the bottom to play with so it won't be too tight!! hopefully.
