Help Needed

Post by yamisfast »

I have a 1989 250 chassis that I am using for a race bike project. I want to change the front end and and change the back shock. What is the the best suspension mods that you "fzr guru's" would recommend. :tks:

Not sure for the forks; I haven't installed my YZF750 front end yet. A fellow on FZR250.com installed an R6 shock with great success.

I seen that on fzr250.com that site is kind of dead now. I think its the 06-09 yzf r6 shock that fits. I am more iterested in changing the forks at the moment. The supension is my main aim at the moment because the engine i am using is a small light compact unit and i want to get the suspension to the best level I can possible get.

If yours is an 89 model then it has the single disc?

If so then to be honest the easiest swap is going to be a later 3LN twin disc front end. The forks are 38mm (same as some of the later 400 and 600 Genesis I think) and you get a decent remote reservoir master cylinder. Just give the calipers a refresh and new seals, braided brake lines and decent pads and you won't want for more.

Because the forks are 38mm it shouldn't be too hard to get uprated springs either.

The '89 was the 3LN1 with dual disks. There is a fair bit of confusion around the 250 model years because Yamaha Australia imported them as grey bikes several years later, and the date on the paperwork is the import year, not the model year.

I have absolutely no paper work what so ever. I picked up the two frames in a scrap yard. I picked the best out of the two. I have narrowed down the suspension mods i am going to do 06-09 r6 back shock gsxr 750 front end OR aprilia rs 250 front end. which ever front end i can get the cheapest will be going into it. The chassis the i have now is in a sorry lookng state as it sits at the moment but a good powerwash and polish it should be redy for its revamp. Another Question has any one ever tried to put a smaller engine into the 250 frame.
