Multimeter Coil Test

Post by GreyImport »

So Im trying to troubleshoot a problem and tried to test my coils ... in fact all 4 coils I have.

Now the primary should read around 2.8 ohms

And the secondary should be around 15K ohms

All mine read primary 1.0 and secondary = no reading.

Can anyone explain that? .... am I missing something?

The 2 on the bike are producing a nice healthy blue spark

Yeah, you are doing the testing wrong.

Explain your procedure

Primary : multimeter on 200m (ohm side)
probes on + and - terminals of coil (or into the disconnected plug for the ones on the bike)

Secondary : multimeter on 20K (ohm side)
probe on + terminal and other in the end of plug lead.

The secondary windings are isolated from the primaries. These are double-ended coils, so measure the resistance through both spark wires (without the caps).

The primary measurement sounds low, but not impossible. It may be your ohmmeter is out of its comfort zone ...
