FZR250/FZR400 engine

Hi guys,

A double posting ( repeated in the both the both 250 and 400 sections to get answers from both crowds).

I have an FZR250 (duh) 1989 model. A 2kr. The engine has just sh#t itself. Toying with the idea of doing a rebuild or replacing it with another to solve some of its other irritating issues.

Does anybody know if either an FZR400 engine of the same age, or a 3LN engine will fit into the 2Kr frame without having to do any major changes ? ? (supposed to be an 89, but i think an 88, there is no exup valve, not that I care if i get an engine that had one and Its just not fitted, I'm used to having no low end torque !)

Anyways, would appreciate anyones knowledge.

Also, Can anyone else who owns a 250 tell me how hot theirs gets ? Mine boils over chronically, so much so that I've blown a head gaskit and now destroyed a crankshaft bearing from boiling oil. I've checked everything on the cooling system and it all seems ok ? Or rather seemed ok, somewhat not running now.

I would be amazed if the 400 fit that 250 frame. Would like to see it though.

It sound like you have an '86 or 87; the 88 2KR / 3HX1s had EXUP. I've read of a guy swapping a 2KR engine into a 3LN frame, so it can be done. You'll probably find it easier with an '89 3LN1, since the external spin-on oil filter of the later models will (so I'm told) foul the kickstand. If you get an EXUP model for your transplant, either get the black box, servo, and header that goes with it, or swap your old cams in. The EXUP cams were tuned for top end, relying on the EXUP to provide usable power down low.

Considering the ease with which the FZR600 engine drops into a FZR400 chassis, I too would be surprised if the 400 fit! Also, the 3LN and 2KRs have perimeter frames, with the engine as a stressed member. The 1WG 400s are double-cradle, so the engine won't have mounting lugs on the cylinders. The later 3TJ 400 RR models were perimeter frames, but they're kinda rare...

I think you might be right about it being an 86. More proof i was ripped off when I bought it i guess.
I have a suspicion its been made from a million difference bikes.
So you think I might be able to get an 89 3ln1 engine into it ? Do you know if its a relatively simple swap ? IE not much that needs changing.
