lights dimming and going bright

Post by cntryboy85 »

I started having issues with my lights and battery tonight. Road 63 mile to the inlaws house on the interstate at 85 the whole way. Got to the house forgot to turn off the radar detector for about 10-15 minutes. Went to go to dinner and the battery was dead. Jumpped it off after dinner road back to my house. On the way home I turned on my left blinker and it killed my headlights for a second then they didn't do it again. On the way home I noticed that my lights both headlights and cluster lights were going dim and coming back bright. Need help before I go buy a new VR and it isn't the issue. Some on please help me. I don't want to have to park my bike going into summer. :duh:

Sure sounds like the VR. Check the battery voltage across the terminals at 5k rpm.

I also recommend a slow charger and go overnight with it. Any time my battery goes dead I will do it just to make sure I'm not killing her of.

As I said, check the battery voltage at 5k rpm. If the voltage is over 15.5v (manual value), it's failed high (a few fellows who specialise in electricals have suggested that 14.7v should be considered the high limit); if the voltage is under 13.5v, either the VRR has failed low, or the alternator isn't working properly.

Check the connections to the alternator for cleanliness and security. Disconnect the VRR and start the bike - you are now running total loss, but that's not an issue. You may want to pull the headlight fuse first. Measure the AC voltage across each combination of the three white wires (A-B, A-C, B-C; there isn't any labeling, this is just for illustration). If you don't see 30-60vac across each phase, then the stator needs repair, or rewinding, or replacement. If one phase reads 0vac, then you probably have a failed solder joint at the stator itself, and this is a fairly simple repair.

If the stator passes, then the VRR has failed low.

It's annoying but not hard. It's a 'dry' cover, and is just the work of a few Allen bolts.
