How can I test R6 VR

Post by tkclow »

I just got a new (used) R6 VR and it looks like the positive terminal (top left) is slightly melted and the terminal is slightly
loose. How can I test this to make sure it isn't fried before I cut out my old connector and wire it in. I just don't want to get everything wired before I know if it is cooked or not and have to take it all back apart. Thanks for any advise

A) don't cut..just extract the terminals from the connector block ( put a dental pick or straightened paper clip in the back side of the block next each individual terminal and slide out that connector.

B) hard, if not impossible to test the output of the reg without the three phase AC input from the stator. You could go from that positive output to the case(and also that positive to the neg output) with an ohmeter to verify it isn't internally shorted, but I think that is about it.

you would have to run it into a stator, or something else with a variable voltage output, then connect a VOM to the white output wires and see if the voltage is right. If i were you, i would split off the red and black wires from your old VR and run the bike with the two VR's connected, but only have the R6 one connected by the red and black wires, this way the bike can run off of the old vr while you test the new one, then test the output voltage by putting one VOM lead on the pin and the other to the frame ground. Rev and check all pins on the regulator. Voltage should stay around high 13's or 14.

Match - I don't think that'll work. If you have two regulators in parallel, one trying for 13V and the other trying for, say 20, I would very much think that the 13v will undercut the 20v VR, leaving only 13V showing.

Hmmm... :headscratch:

How's this for a check:
- Obtain a test battery. Discharged but otherwise in good shape would be best.
- Obtain 5 lengths of wire for use as leads. Actual test leads with alligator clips would be best.
- Start and warm the bike with the stock VR and regular battery. Make sure the on-board battery is charged.
- Switch off. Unplug the stock VR; unplug the headlight fuse.
- Dismantle the bike's VR plug as described by Reelrazor above.
- Connect leads from the 3 whites from the alt to the R6 VR; connect leads from the R6 VR red to +ve on the test battery,
black to -ve.
- Start the bike; it will be running total loss, but should be good for an hour or more, especially with the lights off.
- Rev the bike to 3000rpm. Measure the voltage across the second battery. Is it 10v? 13v? 20v?

Comments? While a little more involved, this test avoids the risk of a nuked VR blowing your TCI's brains out as part of the test... :ermm:

TK,
Do not bother if the pin has melted appearance it has taken heat and the loseness confirms that BIN IT !!!!!!!

For the sake of cheapness you want to bin your bike electrics & TDI Think about it

Good ones on ebay or replacement copies are cheap compared to a new loom TDI & VR

Thanks George, I figured it was probably toast from the melting and all but I was just hoping :duh:

if this is the r6 vr you got from me. i guarantee that it works. it came from my running r6. i tested it on my r6 before i shipped to you. the burned part was because i had a corroted terminal (a problem been known from 02 r6). if you are still unsure. here is how you test them.
