92 fzr ignition wire shorting out

Post by ajbsdaisy »

i need any and all suggestions please...92 yamaha fzr 600 ss Vance&Hince...
ignition wires were shorting my power in and out. My friend started to check them, noticed one was bad by testing the wire. he started cuttin the bad one and cut it to short. he finally got the wires together and started taping them seperately and then were going to be taped together again. unfortunately for me, he forgot to turn the key back off, and while taping the short wire somehow moved enough to hit the side of the ignition componet and we heard a slight pop as if a light bulb had burnt out. my bike was completely powerless. we checked the fuses under the seat, but i was so irritated by then i didnt want anyone touching my bike. can someone please tell me the steps i should take to figure out where my power is? i just bought my bike in may, got it tuned up and few things replaced. $1350 and $674 and now no power to ride...PLEASE WHAT DO I DO? banghead

Did you check the main fuse under the left(?) tail?

What "ignition component" was this (there are several)? The only ones that lend themselves to accidental grounding are the plugs and the coil brackets, which would pop the main fuse.

woud you be taking about the main fuses labled for ignition, and 3 other ones? thats under my seat. and the ignition componet i am talking about itwhere the key goes right under that are the wires for the all the lights and power to the bike...the wires were taped together by had been folded with a kink in it and just started shutting my bike off when i started to drive away or turn the handle bars...when he started to cut and twist the ends together he cut the red wire to short that when it was bumped with his fingers the open wire hit the ignition thing the key is in, and he did not turn the key off or disconnect from the battery. all i heard was like a breaker in a house popped...does that explain it a little better?

The main fuse is in a square black pod by itself, looks like a relay. Look here for an example - http://cgi.ebay.ca/YAMAHA-FZR400-1WG-MA ... 19c43ab8bc

This is why the first step in doing anything electrical is "Shut it off!" Not only do you risk zapping yourself, but a crapload of other parts as well!

The thing he's working on is the key switch, ignition switch, ignition lock - a few names for it.
