trouble getting bike to start 94 fzr600

Post by del_barry »

I upgraded my voltage regulator last sring to a 99 r6 unit
I used the how-to on this forum to get it hooked up
But I used the ground from the frame as the ground to the new VR
Last Thursday I corrected this and used a short length of 12g wire to connect from the plug on the VR to ground to the frame and grounded the stock black ground from the harness to the frame
I has put my old batter on a trickle charger, put in in the bike and she fired up
Then I went out on Friday morning and it wouldn't start
I changed the spark plugs and bought a new battery
Still won't completley start.
I will take a video today and post it with this thread and see if it will help

How exactly shold I have the vr wired with the ground(s)?
Anyone have a pic of their fzr with an r6 VR?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I need her running ASAP

Well I didn't have the picture like I thought. I'll put this on as a temporary help until someone has a better pic.

Click the link if you can't see it all. I know it's kinda confusing since you can't see what I'm talking about but in this picture the carbs are on the Left and you are looking at the starter in the center of the pic.

The bold that holds the motor in place under your seat goes from one side to the other and there is a bolt on the engine that is directly under where the bolt is nutted to the frame on the right hand side of the frame.

Long story short run your ground to the engine. This picture is horrible so I'm going to search for another one.

When in doubt on these old bikes run the VR ground directly to the bolt on the engine where the battery ground is attached. I am guessing that once you do that you will find that connection all corroded so clean it up real well with a wire brush.

Your description is not clear.

Is it cranking and just not starting? if so it may have nothing to do with the VR.

Or is it NOT cranking - as in dead battery? If you have a charging system problem go to the WIKI and look at the charging system trouble shooting information there. You will need a volt/ohm meter and some patience.

not sure but sounded like your starter gearing was grinding?? that stuff behind that cover near your brake pedal i think. push start it, that might work. i mean really get her moving a pop the clutch. looks like she sat for awhil under the tarp in the cold, try starter fluid, short bursts into the air box might make her live again, then once its running tear them carbs down son!

I'm hoping that it was an audio issue, but that didn't sound good. Might want to remove the peanut cover to see what might be going on in there.

I was expecting something bad in there.
I have no idea
Its misfiring, I have the tank cover off and airbox just sitting. Tried push starting and the airbox popped up almost an inch
I don't have any spray starter stuff so ill have to pick some up
I was thinking it could've gotten some condensation in the carbs or something

Hey I know that sound. Not what is going on in the peanut cover. I agree with Darrin. Open that puppy up.

Here is my video complete with the same backfires.

I took the carbs apart right before this. So I changed the plugs and then she ran. Lots of starter fluid too.

i bought some starter fluid tonight. im hoping for better weather tomorrow to try and get her running
i took the peanut cover off and everything looks fine. i will take a picture tomorrow
no metal shavings, just a small "C" shaped indent from when the bike was laid down sometime before i bought it
i think its the bike hating me... i'm selling her this week, running or not :(
time to move on, i've spent too muc money on this and i don't live in a house where i have a garage to work on her
i feel bad but something newer is needed

well i tried spraying starter fluid, didn't start
didn't get a chance to try pushstart
but i worked out a deal with the guy that wants my bike, seems like it could be starter gears but the look fine with the peanut cover off

So the gears appear to be fine but I don't know how I missed this on the inside of the peanut cover
Image

I don't know what to do. I want the bike running for the guy buying it.
Could an old fuel filter be an issue too? Only heard 1 click from the fuel pump when I went to the bike today
Or maybe the fuel pump itself? What could cause the gears to grind against the cover like that?

I took the battery down to the battery shop
They slapped it on the charger for awhile
I don't remember exactly but I think he said it had 200 cold cranking amps or something
Anyhow, got home and tossed it in the bike it fired up then died.
Kept trying and couldn't get it to start all the way up again.
Took this vid after trying for a bit

Image

The battery was bought new just a few weeks ago, I'm thinking the stator is draining it
To check the ohms for the stator at the VR like the wiki says, do I have to have the ignition in the 'on' position neg to gnd and posto the white wires at the vr correct?
