Re: stock dogbone length?
To raise the tail about 1.5"-2" I go with a 5" center on center. Stock length is 5.8" center on center. 1mm shorter bones will yield about 2.4mm raise on average.haunter wrote:anyone know........I need to raise the tail on the 600.......
I've always made mine out of 6061 T6 because it's inexpensive and strong enough.
If your buddy can get it, go with 7075 T6. It's about 3 times as much but has almost double the strength rating. 2024 has about a 7k lb higher rating than 6061 but isn't as easy to come by and doesn't weld very well. Not that there will be welding of dogbones but....
Make them .25" thick and then standard dimensions after that.
The below figures should give people an idea of the strength ratings of aircraft grade aluminum. Keep in mind any of these aluminums need to be a T6 for strength. A 6061 0 will not be anywhere near as strong as a 6061 T6. All data can be found at http://www.matweb.com
2024 T6 -
Shear Strength - 41,000psi
Fatigue Strength - 18,000psi
Machinability - 70%
Yield Tensile Strength - 50,000psi
6061 T6 -
Shear Strength - 30,000psi
Fatigue Strength - 14,000psi
Machinability - 50%
Yield Tensile Strength - 40,000psi
7075 T6 -
Shear Strength - 48,000psi
Fatigue Strength - 23,000psi
Machinability - 70%
Yield Tensile Strength - 73,000psi

As I said though, the ones I've got on my bike now I made from 6061 and they have given me no problems to speak of. If I'd had 7075 I would have used it just for the overkill factor but I have to order that if I want it. A local shop carries 6061 for $3/lb. Your buddy can probably get 7075 without a problem so I would say go for it. Make them .25" thick and then standard dimensions after that.

Re: stock dogbone length?
thanks man. You mind if I edit this down some later and move it to the wiki forum so they can have a wiki dogbone article?
