Newbie, bought a track fzr4. How can Identify my engine??

Post by ManDogFish »

I bought a track to road converted fzr400 as my first bike... Has had 2 previous owners... modified nicely...
Picked it up for $2k... guy said the things got custom bodywork, port polished head, r6 forks and a cbr swing arm(is not)... turns out... the bike has r6 brakes, HID's, r6 rims, 120/180(i think), race wire loom, K&N's, footpegs, some steering damper and a VanceHines SS2 exhaust aswell (other stuff too)

previous owner says its got the original engine =\...the SS2 exhaust was only made for the yzf600r engine... I think the engine might be from a yzf... its loud... and seems a little wayy to powerful to start learning how to ride on...radiator seems larger than the stock one. The yzf and fzr engine look really similar in pictures...

how can I identify the engine in the bike??

I know this bike. You are in the GTA aren't you?

It has a CBR F3 rear wheel. Might be a 180 rear tire squeezed on there but I think the proper tire size for that wheel is 160 or 170. R1 front forks. It seems well enough put together. I almost bought this bike at one point. I beleive it is still a 400cc though. Would have to see a pic of the engine to know other wise. But from what I recall it's still 400 cc.

Hi,
what ever you bought it is nice piece of kit, you need to find the engine number stamped on the engine cases from that one of our historical buffs will be able to tell you what size it probably is (not allowing for re-bores and stroker cranks etc. ) 400 do seem awful quick as the power to weight ratio is very good. and the steering is spot on (not sure what diff the shocks would make on your bike) took me by suprise last week at Poole bike night for sure when I tried one out (thanks to SteveO)

This is the FZR400 Hybrid that I helped BMiller put together in my garage 1-1/2 years ago. It has been changed a little bit but nicely.

I can identify the exhaust can hanger as a one off custom piece that I helped B bend up. As well as the 05 R6 swingarm, Woodcraft rearsets, and black powder coated frame. It has a YZF600R engine in it.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

wow.. nice... yea, the exhaust hanger is a bent aluminum thing... I would appreciate it if you could give me any more info about the bike....??
from what i see, i think the following has been done to it:

*1989 fzr400r
powder coated chassis
yamaha fzr600 tank
yamaha r6 forks
-adjustable
yamaha r6 brakes
steel braided brake lines
yamaha r6 front wheel
120/180 tires
Honda CBR rearwheel
UNKNOWN rear suspension
fibreglass custom bodywork
super cushy seat
custom front lights with HID
racing rpm/speedo
Suzuki Hayabusa mirrors w/indicators
Vance&Hine exhaust (maybe headers too)
K&N individual airpods
semi-custom wire loom
Billet aluminum clutch/adjustable brake levers
Billet aluminum adjustable foot pegs
Port polished head
Uknown steering damper

another thing i dont get is... that in the vechicle history it says that its got 2 previous owners.... first from waterloo, who got the bike registered in 2007, second in the GTA who got it in 2009.... the bikes from 1989... who had it before 2007?? no records
HAHAHA....i feel soo lucky

added some more pics
http://www.bikepics.com/members/mandogf ... zr400exup/
... of one side of the engine... would not be able to take more pics until the weekend

i tried identifying the engine from the same pics... Did not succeed... Most of the yzf6r engines (pics online) do not have cooling fins on the side of the head.... while some of them do... on the other hand all fzr4&6 engines do.. to me everything else of the engine looks same...

The plastic/rubber thing under the chain on the swingarm seemed to wear out as the bike was ridden in the parking... is this anything to be concerned about?? the bike also starts knocking if you take off in second gear (between 5-10km/hr only)...the knocking is not from the engine, seems like its from the chain.... which doesnt make sense..

Yep, I can 100% verify that bike as the one BMiller and I did. Arron (the_finch) and Mark (95fzr600) also helped out with it. I looked at the other pics you had and noticed the lower radiator mount. It bolts to the one of the header bolts. I made that for him at about 2'o clock in the morning when we ere working on it.

Like I said, it has changed a little bit. The tank is a YZF600R, but doesn't look like the one we used as it was blue. Although the person who bought it from Billy was going to paint it so it might be the same one. The person you got it from has swapped out the ZX6R forks for some 98-02 R1 forks and also changed all the body work. If it still has the same gauge, it is a Vapor VR2 digital gauge. Look under the seat and take a picture. I'd love to see if someone changed how the battery was mounted or the top shock linkage. The top shock linkage should be a steel plate that is bolted to the subframe. It should still have the full V&H SS2R exhaust. I can see the can obviously, but the header is a little difficult to see clearly.

Here is a link to the build thread. - viewtopic.php?f=30&t=2620 But all the pics have expired. I'll contact him and get him to send them to you some how.

Its not the same bike. This bike has been around for about 3 years now I have had my eye on it. The bike you and BMiller built is totally different. You said it had the R6 swingarm. That is definately not an r6 swingarm. And the wheel is clearly a CBR F3 rear wheel.

Your right. Sorry man, I miss identified two parts that through me way off.

I didn't see the spokes of the rear rim being angled. Which would make it not a R6 rim. Also, you have a FZR600 engine not a YZF600 engine. I thought a blur was the oil fill cap and it wasn't. The FZR600 has the oil fill cap straight up and down while the YZF600 cap is pointed more at the 10'clock position and can be seen sticking out beyond the fairings (which was the blur I thought I saw). Took a look at the other pictures you posted and noticed it didn't have the oil cooler plumbing which is another indicator. But man, some of those other items are damn near the identical part it's scary.

Oh well, can't be correct on everything.
