So cheaper to buy a used complete bike instead of try to by piece by piece ?. I see your sig, how do u like your 90 400 with the 600 motor ?, thanks for the information.

probably easier to buy a complete bike, and sell off what you dont need. thats what i did when i did mine. it is an easy swap, you may want to use the 600 radiator, you will have to fab up some little brackets, very easy. otherwise it is very straight forward. i love the difference in going from a steel frame to the aluminum. of coarse i did a lot of changes all at once, so that kinda skews the difference in just the frame.

What is best year YZF 600r motor to swap ? did they change much ? i have a chance to pickup a clean 06 yzf 600 motor with 8000 miles on it for a good price, will this motor work good for the 400 frame swap ?

Yes, it is a good motor. But you will have sprocket alignment issues unless you've done a swingarm swap as well. It bolts directly in and the parts list is the same as bolting the FZR600 engine in (just everything is YZF600 specific). The only issue that no one has mentioned yet is the fact that the air boxes will not fit under the 400 tank cover. You need to either get a YZF600 tank or run pods. Now on the YZF600 air box, you want to get a 95-96 air box. The 97+ uses ram air and is absolutely useless to you. You will also have to cut up parts of the air box and seal the holes with either duck tape or fiberglass. But it is very easy and pods are also a choice with the YZF600 engine.

Hi,
if you opt for pods do not be put off by the horror stories of tuning the engine for pods !

If you use pods you simply must have the rubber sleeves that go between carbs & air box and use them with plastic plumbing pipe inside them so you can put the pods CORRECTLY spaced off from the carb and not acting as an air dam& stifling the engine.

Inlet tracts are matched to the exhaust system by the engine design alter one and you are then faced with matching the other to it to get the best out of your motor.

Ok what about lining up the sprockets ? i dont want to swap swingarms, i like my delta box 90 swingarm ????. I will also have a 07 R6 gas tank, but i will run pods, thats not a problem, but the sprocket issue has me concerned.

If you don't want to swap swingarms you probably won't be able to use the YZF motor. The output shaft of the YZF is offset something like 8mm further out from the centerline of the motorcycle compared to either the fzr6 or the fzr4 motors. IMO, if you already found a YZF motor for fairly cheap, it's worth the extra 30hp it puts out to swap in a swingarm. The YZF swingarm looks nearly identical to the deltabox swinger you have now. Just follow MrFreeze5's write-up in the wiki: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=563

Its a steel swingarm, have to buy a new rear rim. I read the thread you posted on the swap, sounds like a lot of work.

If you really don't want to do the swinger swap, a FZR6 motor will bolt straight in.

Just to clarify, the YZF600 motor is good for 30hp over the FZR400 motor and 10hp over the FZR600 motor. So if HP isn't a big concern and you don't want to do more work like a swingarm swap, then just find a decent FZR600 engine. It will make life a little easier for you.

There is no other advantage to the YZF motor over the FZr600 motor.

Ok last question, is there a way to offset the rear sprocket on my stock 400 rim to work with the yzf 600 motor without doing a swingarm swap ?, i found a really good motor but its a yzf.

Do you have 8mm of clearance between the current chain/sprocket and the swingarm? If so, then the sprocket can be shimmed over on the carrier, OR, the carrier could be moved to the left (spacer outside of it parted by 8mm and one made to hold the carrier at a standoff from the wheel hub).

You will need to go up a chain size(#530) if you still run the stock 400's #428 chain.
