HOW TO: YZF600R swingarm swap MOD

Post by abs929cbrrr »

here is some specs on the swap:

-must removed bushings
-cut 0.375 off each end of the swingarm.
-make sure over all lenght is 8.47-8.50" with out dust caps and washers.
-final width to match fzr frame needs to be 8.75"
-bushing seat needs to be cut 0.075" deeper per side but if you do not have an end mill use a dremal and just taper it until the bushing sits flush with the end of the swingar with out dust cap.
-you use your fzr600 pivot bolt and nut-
-you need to buy new bushing and install them (taping them out mashes them up)
-you use the bushing shaft of the fzr not the yzf (dia is the same so swap them out, you dont need to cut the yzf one if the fzr is already the correct lenght) If you do use the yzf bushing shaft it needs to be milled down 0.400" on both sides. this will get it 8.50" just like the fzr one.
-remove no more then 1/2 of the dust caps material and cut the rubber seal down with a sharp knife once you install it into the cut down dust cap. if dust caps do not go on right check the welds around the mounting hole.....they are slopy and not consistant...file or dremel the weld down only where you need it.

reinstall everything and go ride. this is all you need to do get it to fit in the fzr400/fzr600 frame.

after this you need all the yzf600r rear end stuff unless your like me and want to use a different wheel...i never choose the easy project my buddy says.

I'd like to add: Please keep in mind that this is ONLY for the swing arm mod. Adapting the YZF rear wheel etc. will require a bit more work to get the sprockets to line up. Not sure if abs600fzrr wants to add to this thread, but I can offer my own experiences to this, if he likes. Insight from other owners who have done this could probably be helpful as well.

Please do. Let us know what it takes to line them up - I'm curious myself. I will add it to ABS's original POST.

use a 03-06 zx6r front sproket to get the chain to line up. you must use a 520 Pitch front sprocket, chain and rear sprocket. besides that the swap is easy.

only other problem you will run into is the swingarm hitting the backs of the foot peg mounts. these will also need machined down or some type of spacers made. i will look into this in the future.

I would put a write-up in the WIKI since this is a common modification for the FZR600.

I can provide some photos for it.

I do believe it is about 1/2" longer. It is made of steel.

Since wheel tire info seems to be a big topic, we need to pin a tire/wheel thread. Usually most modifications are to give an updated look to your FZR. Getting a wider rear tire is close to the top of the list for most.

TIRE/WHEEL INFO. The rim size on the FZR is 3.0x17 front and 4.0x18 rear (1989 600 was the only year that has a 3.5inch rim, all other years and the 400 had a 4.0 rim). These are not common sizes as newer bikes use smaller (17 rear) wider tires, which means there aren't a lot of tire choices out there. For stock rims, a common favorite on the board is Bridgestone BT-010 (front 110/70ZR17 rear 150/60ZR18). Now as far as putting bigger tires on Stock FZR rims, DON'T DO IT. It is a safety hazard, it will not increase your bikes performance and a real hassle with the tire rubbing against various components. The FZR doesn't have enough power to require the larger rear tires on commonly seen on today’s bikes. It will also make your bike perform worse, bigger tires are heavier, don't forget that you will be using more power to accelerate that extra weight, and since the tire will be pinched in the rim it will not handle as well. Also, it’s important to note, tires have a shelf life of a few years you don’t want to buy a tire that has been sitting in a rack for 5 years. Check the manufacture or “freshness” date to be sure you aren’t getting old stock.

To give your bike a more modern look, you need an upgrade to a 4.5x17 rear wheel. 4.5x17 is common by today’s standards and provides a wide tires selection as well. Some rear wheels do fit the stock FZR swinger but they are harder to find and will require some custom work.. Some examples below..

1. 1990 TZ250, this rim will directly bolt into the FZR swing arm with no modifications and match the front wheel, but it is one of the most expensive and hard to find.

2. 1988-89 GSXR750/1100 rims, these rims will require some machining (milling the sprocket carrier and custom spacers) to get them in and they will match the stock front. These are easier to find on ebay

3. CBR600 F2 rims, these rims will also require some machining to install (a VFR500 sprocket carrier will fit and it is smaller so that you don't have to machine it). You will also need to make a custom brake setup for the rear brake

OK, all that said, if you must have a bigger rear tire you need to swap the rear end.

REAR END SWAPS. The cold hard facts, there aren't any rear end swaps that provide better handling, but they do give you the fatter rear tire and updated look. Keep in mind over the years we have seen many different swing arms attached to an FZR frame. Anything is possible, depending on your skill level and ability. The most common swap is the YZF because it is the easiest and will allow you to use its 5.5x17 rear rim, and 180/60ZR17 rear tire (again, this is all about looks. There is no need for a rim/tire that big on the FZR). To make this swap even easier use a 03-06 zx6r front sprocket to get the chain to line up. you must use a 520 Pitch front sprocket, chain and rear sprocket. Besides that, some custom spacers will be required.. It’s important to point out the YZF swing arm is longer than the FZR swing arm, so this will effect the steering geometry of the bike. While most of us may never notice, if you are a serious rider and enjoy “track day” this is not an option for you..

FRONT END SWAPS. Again, there are many other front ends that can be made to fit the FZR and anything is possible if you have the skill and tenacity but they will require a lot of matching and other work that is beyond the average skill level. The easiest to fit are the YZF600 front ends. The 1997-up ones are the best as they are fully adjustable and are have a 41mm diameter. The 1996 forks are fully adjustable and bolt on but they have a different lower fork leg that was unique to the 95-96 models. Also available are the 1994-95 forks, these are much better than the stock FZR forks but they aren't fully adjustable (preload only). To do these swaps, you will need a COMPLETE front end (forks, steering stem, triple clamp, clip-ons, wheel, and the axle). The Brakes from a 91+ FZR600 are reusable though, or you can swap in YZF600r, R6, or R1 brakes. (if you are doing a front end swap, update you brakes at the same time).

"The most common swap is the YZF because it is the easiest and will allow you to use its 5.5x17 rear rim, and 180/60ZR17 rear tire"

this is not true. YZF600r has 5.0x17 rim and uses a 160/60zr17.

you must use a 5.5" rim if you want a 180. i have specs on how to get a 99-02 R6 rim onto the YZF600r swingarm and axle.
