Re: Suzuki 17" Rim on stock FZR swingarm MOD (Testing Grounds)
is it impossible to "stretch" out the stock swinger to let it fit a wider wheel?
do what that guy did with the r6 headers on the fzr motor.

you can get a wider rim.............but how are you going to line the sprocket up to it? I am sure I can make a 6 inch wheel work.............but how will I get the sprocket to line up? No easy answer there.

will will always have to use a different sprocket. one of the guys says that the 600 ninja sprocket will work. he has the part number if you want it.nynoah wrote:you can get a wider rim.............but how are you going to line the sprocket up to it? Anything is possible but you may still have to work within the size limitations of the engine and frame being used. It would still be a "give and take" sort of thing between the frame and swing arm. Not saying it can't be done but it will take a good amount of work to get it right.shredex wrote:is it impossible to "stretch" out the stock swinger to let it fit a wider wheel?

The best option is to find another swingarm that is already wider. It would be better to add spacers, then force a larger wheel into a smaller swingarm.

I think he is taking about using the Ninja sprocket with the YZF swingarm. Personally, I wouldn't trust an offset like that. I'd rather mill the sprocket hub down.shredex wrote:will will always have to use a different sprocket. one of the guys says that the 600 ninja sprocket will work. he has the part number if you want it.

you can tell the year of the rim by the casting number. A 1988 wheel will have 88 cast in one of the locations I circled. A 1989 will have 89, a 1996 will have 96 and so forth.

Last week I received a 1997 Suzuki Bandit 600 17x4.5 wheel I won on eBay a while back. Cheaper and easier to find than an old gixxer rim, same style, same size. Hub, cush, and sprocket on the way. I'll document everything thoroughly as I work on the conversion over the next couple of months, unless someone beats me to it.
1997 FZR600RJ
Engine: K&N Drop-in air filter - stock airbox - FP 5°ignition advancer - EBC "Street Racer" Kevlar clutch
Exhaust: Stock header - Yoshimura RS-3 Carbon fiber slip-on
Body: Original paint/graphics - Clear Alternatives integrated LED Taillight - Flanders' flush front signals - YZF600 Mirrors - Comp. Werkes Stainless fender eliminator/tag bracket - 60w/55w H4 headlights
Tires: Metzler MEZ4B 120/70 ZR17 Front - Michelin Madacam 100x 150/70 ZR18 Rear
Brakes:Stock rotors with EBC HH Sinstered pads
In the works: YZF600 header, '97 Bandit 600 rear wheel, DynoJet Stage 3, Racetech Springs and Emulators fork rebuild, FZ1 rear shock, YZF600 front MC, Galfer SS Lines, CFM rearsets

Would not surprise me if it's the same wheel only moved to a different bike line. I bet the Katana wheel is the same one as well.

From what I saw with Google search right before I bought it, it should interchange between the Suzuki's no prob. Maybe different bearings, but we're looking for the bearing size to fit a stock 600 rear axle anyway, so that wouldn't matter.

Re: Suzuki 17" Rim on stock FZR swingarm MOD (Testing Grounds)
Hope this helps..
1. "Remove .345 from sprocket carrier where sprocket sits.
2. Remove .305 from sprocket carrier where stock bearing seal sits.
3. Replace bearing with sealed bearing type but same size.
4. On sprocket side use stock spacer plus 25mm O.D. 17mm I.D. by 1.73 inch spacer that slips into carrier.
5. Use stock brake arm and .510 spacer with 17mm I.D./ O.D. of this spacer is non critical. this spacer goes between brake arm and wheel bearing like stock one.
6. The stock Suzuki disc can be cut down to the same O.D. and width as 400. The O.D. with have cut thru holes or you can make a disc. The stock disc cannot be adapted.
7. Stock caliper needs bottom left surface filed down about .025 to provide clearance for larger hub of GSX-R-r wheel.
8. A 600fzr caliper bracket can be used with the stock Suzuki disc but then you cannot easily switch from a stock wheel to the Suzuki wheel if you have 18 inch rains on stock wheels (Bridgestone).

Did you have to use the 636 front sprocket or did you use the 520 conversion FZR front sprocket?CaptainCanuck wrote:Those measurements are on the money, mine is done !
