In the third photo the chain appears to be slack (or is it my eyes). Also the swing arm has been swapped @ some point, possible causing the front and rear sprockets to be out of alignment? which will cause chain/sprocket grinding (Knocking) Maybe the reason the chain is slack, the PO may have slackened it to quieten the knocking.
The guy's (Freestyle Cad E.T.C.) who have tackled the swing arm swap/sprocket alignment issue can advise you on that.
Just a guess BTW.
