R1 fork swap done, but questions...

You are probably missing what I've circled in red.



They are two nuts that go between the bearing cover and the top triple. Should also include a spacer and an alignment clip.

I used THREE of the #4's in that schmatic to raise the top triple to compansate for the space...and thats how i solved this problem that 'Bad Habit' has.

Really? how? It doesnt seem right to have 1/2-3/4" gap like that unless the stem is not deep enough in the lower triple. Youre not changing the dimensions of the stem, its a FZR stem. If its that far off, there's something up. I would be hesitant to add another lock ring to take up the difference. Then youve got less material in the lower triple and your asking for failure. A washer's thickness is not that bad, but needing to add a third lock nut bothers me.

Im still banking on that spacer. Here is how big mine is:

normally stems are pressed in the bottem tripple so they are completer flush with the bottom. i say normaly...my 929 is not like that.

my was pressed in flush with the bottom then had a big washer welded to it so its not pulling out...
freeze, look at your spacer, it has a wider base which doesnt fit throught the top triple, I think that maybe that is acting like a spacer thats giving you just enough spacing to have triple pushed up far enough for the nut to reach the base.
bad habit has the same spacer that I have,(without the wider base on the spacer)
so we must compansate for that spacing that you have....

Can you take a picture of the top of your lower triple? Id like a better look at your steering stops. My triple was the prototype and doesnt have stops. i want to see how closethey are in design.

There is a pic of it with the stops up the page some. Still have to extend the tab on the frame for the stops to hit.


I think my solution is an additional spacer below the clamp to raise the clamp high enough for the nut to tighten to it (which is the thickness of the lock nuts, like shred used) and to take this bushing down to the thickness of the clamp, so it's doing it's job, but is out of the way. Then, I think I'd have to raise the forks a couple mm, but nothing drastic.

Freeze, ModKing's lower is a full 1 3/4" thick. My stem is pressed 1" into that (which I think is about the thickness of a stock lower). Do you feel that would be unsafe? Anybody else have any concerns, because I am definitely not a mechanical engineer.

That lip on my spacer was put there for a reason. When I press the spacer in from the bottom of the triple, it acts like a stop so it doesnt go too far and interfere. There is a slight relief/lip inside my triple that it fits against nicely. Its not very big, but its big enough. On the top of the triple, the spacer sits flush with the triple. That spacer was not made to float, I wanted a nice firm fit. If I need to replace it I will have to press it back out, it wont go by hand. My spacer is the same thickness as the triple clamp. It does not add and "spacing" above or below, it only acts to accomodate the smaller diameter of the FZR stem. Thats my point, the "spacing" above the triple is what looks to be interfering. I do not see the need to add anything above or below the triple if the stem is correctly oriented, except to take up the difference in thickness between the FZr and R1 triple, which is very small, a washer's thickness.
