1995 Yamaha Virago XV535

Post by Traeldor »

howdy Folks
Okay I read your response regarding TCI versus CDI Ignitions. I have a TCI Ignition on my Virago. I'm impressed, and I joined to be part of this forum. hopefully I'll get answers to questions regarding My bike.
I'm a DIY mechanic, and am curious.... The Battery is not supposed to only read 10 volts when running, right? I'm thinking that's a rectifier regulator problem.
I have problems if I run with high beams on dayside, the engine stops after an hour of riding, and I have to jump start it to get home. Its a new battery, electrolyte levels are proper, and its been tested and has no problems holding the charge if I charge it outside the bike. That leaves me with the idea of the charging system, rotor, stator, reg/rect system so I tested it with a voltmeter with engine running, revved up, I see the voltmeter reads 11 volts, but goes no higher. The service manual says 14 to 15 volts at 5K rpm's. Before I dig into deep engine disassembly of rotor and stator assemblies, I figured I'ld ask somebody. Hopefully Y'all dont just answer about the FZR's alone. If so. thanks for reading and kindly direct me to a site that I can use for such a forum for MY bike.
also what is the cause of an excessive rocker arm play in the front cylindar exhaust valve assembly? It seemed I could move it nearly a quarter of an inch when I adjusted them. The other three valve rocker arms had minimal play at TDC. just barely moved (( wiggled to ensure the Timing was TDC for each Cyl.)) I'm noting a rough idle of late and a possible thunking at idle. I'm planning a top end rebuild in a couple of weeks, but just wanted to chat with somebody about it.

Thanks,
Dave in SC

Hiya, Dave!

I can't offer anything intelligent about your rocker arms, other than to agree that a 1/4" of lash is ridiculous!

Your charging system definitely has some issues. You've already done one check, measuring across the battery while rev'd up - reads low. Ok. The next check is to unplug the VRR, start up, and measure the AC voltage across each combination of white wires from the alternator: 1-2, 1-3, 2-3. You should see 30-60vac across each pair. If any one pair is low, your stator needs to be replaced or repaired (check all connections, obviously). If the stator checks out, your VRR has failed low and needs to be replaced.

Rocker arm play side to side?

And, yes, you either have a charging issue, or a pretty severe voltage draw.

Check the diagnostic chart at Electrosport's website:

And here is their "known issues" page for the 95 XV535:

The Yamaha Vision pages are pretty good too:

Thanks for the help. I'll do the checks today. Today she goes into my garage for a rebuild. since I have only 60 for a compression check first cylinder. Time for a rebuild. woot.

I can't speak for the actual values matching up on a virago, but this will give you some ballpark ideas for testing your charging system

Reelrazors link would work too.
