I know it is super early in the year here. But i was bored at work fantasizing about getting the motorcycle looking perfect over this winter. This thread may die over the next few months but will have some life breathed back into come winter wrenching time! Until then, humor me!

wow how big of a slacker am i? I pretty much did absolutely nothing over that last winter. Although since then over the summer and stuff, thatkid has helped me put a custom passenger seat on the airtech tail, we sync'd our carbs together, he helped me install an R6 front MC (from him), carbon fiber levers, fixed the rear brake not bleeding problem (he's got pics of it somewhere, it was really messed up) i purchased pod filters (although i'm going to need a flo commander because although it's running ok and I gained some MPG, i still am losing some power). We relocated the mount for my FTC res, put the rear passenger pegs on to go with the passenger seat. oh god and i almost forgot! I got frame coolers! those need to be touched up a little as well. I also got my headers sandblasted by a friend and then I painted them with high temp paint at the beginning of the summer (although they are starting to rust already so I think i will end up wrapping them and possibly go with a custom bent undertail if it's in the budget this winter).

So plans have somewhat changed this winter. There are some issues right now with the bike but since it's riding season and it's rideable i'm putting those on the backburner for now. For this winter i'd like to:

-Get the frame, subframe and swingarm powdercoated. The swingarm also has a dent that i'd like to have taken out as well.
-Repaint rear MC and caliper, and get some new brake pads all around (Rear Caliper has been rebuild and repainted, just waiting for new pads to arrive) 8/28
-Buy a paint gun and attempt a somewhat professional repainting job of my fairings. They also need a little re-fiber-glassing touch up
-YZF mirrors with integrated turn signals. I have never had turn signals on my bike so hopefully this won't be a huge headache wiring them up. but i sort of know it will be Mirrors are now on the bike, just not wired up yet. 8/28
-thatkid is working on a template so I can use his R6 calipers on my 89 front forks. I'll prob. look into getting new fork springs as well because mine dips real bad when i'm hard on the brakes
-rebuild my rear shock. I have a fox TC and I am going to talk to modking for some pointers. to go along with that one of my dogbones is bent. i'm going to have thatkid make me up some new ones (he just doesn't know it yet! :-D)
I do not have a Fox TC I have a WP rear shock. there is a guy i found in southern WI that rebuilds shocks for $35+parts. 8/28
I need new pegs as well. I have never had the correct pegs on mine. they are broken off and the left is on the right and vice versa. thatkid never lets me hear the end of it haha
-I really want to go with the ford coil conversion as well as some iridium IX plugs. I haven't got around to trying them yet. ordered, should be coming in shortly 8/28
-Check valve clearance and re-shim back to specs.
-repack and paint my exhaust. I am also throwing around the idea of an undertail exhaust depending on where i am in the budget for the project and if i can find a place that does mandrel bends.
-flo commander (and possibly remote, again, budget) for the pods
-relocate radiator overflow (i have had way too many "is that NOS!?!" comments (although i Love thatkids 1337mounting skillzzzz))
-I'm torn between getting the headers wrapped or coated. I'm betting on wrapped because it will be infinitely cheaper lol.

-New Grips
-New Emulsion tubes

I'm also going to make a build goal of $1500. I know that it wont be an investment where i'll get "more out than i put in," but i think i will love the learning experience and the fact that I did all the work to my bike. it won't just be like everyone else's gsxr or r6
----------------------

That's all I can think of right now. Don't worry i'm sure there's tons more that i'm missing. The list is damn intimidating and it might not even happen unless I can convince thatkid to let me store my bike over at his place for the winter and work on it there. Well, he's fine with it, it's his dad that would be losing his basement space.....
but once it's there, i'll have the advantage of having a modding god at my disposal with one fzr rebuild already under his belt (or is it two?)

You know, a few times i stopped and thought about what colors I want, but the orange and black combo is pretty different. I don't see too many bikes out there with that scheme and I like it. I'll prob still keep the rear wheel orange and the body parts the same colors. I may swap the colors around but IDK, i like the alternating orange and black, i don't think i'll go for one solid color. but it's definitely going to be clean. no decals or stickers or anything crazy. Just a clean frame, clean fairings, clean engine. I feel like i'm getting so far ahead of myself because although i'll have help (i hope!!) this will still be my first experience completely disassembling and reassembling a motorcycle.

OK guys so what's the work on exhaust repacking? I have a D&D exhaust and the kit from D&D is $54 and they send you packing, SS caps and rivets, but idk how many ounces they give you, but its the "street" kit which is supposed to be quieter so i'm guessing more packing. TK pointed me to some moose exhaust repacking material on denniskirk for &17.99. 8.8oz of material, but i would not get the ss end caps, etc. what do you guys think?

Also, i'm looking into new SS lines for the front and the rear, but i'm not really sure where to look or what i'm looking for. What is a good brand? What length do i need?

Get the D&D kit, that way you do it once, do it right, with the right rivets etc.

Go with Spiegler SS/Teflon brake lines, they're worth the extra $20 or $30 over the other brands.
Get custom colors if you want, they look badass. You can get different colors on the banjos and the lines.
They make the exact length for the FZR, order from local shop, they don't sell directly.

I don't know how long your winter is, but I wouldn't attempt everything on that list, and I wouldn't be painting the frame etc if I were you. It's just too much damn work and you'll lose focus on what is really important............ THE SUSPENSION and getting it running right CARBS etc.

I say cosmetics is always last, but that's just me. Sounds like you're in for an awesome fall / winter. Better start ordering parts now. Get your ducks in a row.

Yah I know what you are saying. that list is damn big. Right now it looks like the bulk of my money will be going toward a flo commander and the remote, the R6 front brakes and lines as well as rebuilding my shock (assuming i can ever figure out what kind it is!!). If i have to send my shock out so be it, it'll just be a little more expensive. I will prob. do some painting as well for the calipers, etc. I suppose once all that is in order the body can be upgraded. But i just figure as long as I have the shock out and the rim off and I'll need new tires so those will be coming off, I may as well get a couple things powdercoated.

Agreed
i'll have to PS it out, but it seems like that would look pretty good.

Oh, and I just started working second shift at work and thats when all the cool guys work :-D I can get stuff powdercoated on the FREE. idk about big things yet but today I got my heel guards powdercoated in a flat black. Tomorrow i'll prob get my passenger peg mounts and coolant overflow powdercoated the same color. I wish my bike was apart so I could get more. But then i'd miss riding! What else is small that I could powdercoat... hmmmmmmmmmm Nerd Nerd Nerd Nerd

I say you keep the pattern you have going. Black out the frame and swinger make you back wheel and black and your front wheel and fender orange. my2cents
