3 states, 329 miles, one day

Post by _Will_ »

recently relocated to N Georgia for the roads and the outdoor activities and decided today was a good day for a long ride. Started off going through blood mountain and then followed 129 up to deals gap where I did a single trip up and back. Then just followed 129 back down across blood mountain once again which was interesting since the roads had been rained on in my absence. Only got side tracked one time when I missed my turn off because the sun was in my eyes, just took my 19 miles to notice it :duh: . These roads are an entirely new skill set coming from flat land and no real left handers, let alone switchbacks that are banked.

and on to the pictures

parking lot at the highest paved point on blood mountain

the view from there

random pull off coming up 129, near deals gap

got to get the picture in front of the sign

surprisingly empty parking lot at the resort

I looked it over and found no FZR parts, was proud to have not added any

river you follow to get to deals gap, 55 mps speed limit and nice sweepers all over the place

excuse the discoloration on some of the panoramic shots, cell phones can only do so much

My impressions for any who care:

Blood Mountain:
-nicest flowing road I've ever been on, does have some sweeping near 180's the break up the switch backs
-The southern half is the most fun, I saw an Aprilla that made short work of me on my way up who was still riding the stretch on my way back more than a few hours later.
-you can have a lot of fun on it NOT doing insane speeds, always a plus
-look out on weekends, the people from Atlanta come up and supposedly aren't so great at corners (according to my local friends)

Deal's Gap:
-massive mish mash of corners and hairpins, it would take me some time to get the flow of it.
-fastest people are ones who have memorized it, there was a street fightered 929(guessing on model) running it full bore who has to be a local
-People WILL come into your lane, it's an 11 mile run and I saw 3 people cross over. I personally kissed the yellow once when I first started and let that tell me to slow down.
-There are paved turn offs everywhere, don't be afraid to use them if someone is behind you. It gives you a nice break and let's faster traffic through which many appreciate. I was passed more than I passed people, my pride was still intact on the way out.
-if you see someone spray painted the word "SLOW" on the pavement, it's in your best interest to heed the warning.
-lots of blind corners, those people who come into your lane may well be doing that around them.

Nice. Looks like fun. I've been meaning to do a trip like this.

Were did you move to in GA? I live down near Stone Mountain and Apsolus lives up in Dihlonega. We should do a ride sometime soon.
Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

for sure, I'm close to Cornelia coming up 365. Takes me less than an hour to get on Blood Mountain.

The ride was epic but I was done by the time I got home, only mechanical issue was the throttle loosening up on the carb side but that's happened before. I need to get in there and tighten it down properly.

Great pics!

My only issue with Deal's Gap or any other road with nice curves is not my riding, but the other people who think they know how to ride. They're easy to spot: wearing a wife beater shirt and flip-flops...

Thankfully I didn't see any squids, I saw a rav 4 come over, an F150 that was more scared than overdriving it, and an older goldwing. I also saw a Miata that thankfully went off the non drop off side without much damage. Nice folks and I'm not just saying that because the husband was admiring my bike at the overlook later on, lol

And it wasn't an accident that I wasn't there during the weekend, made for a much nicer ride
