New Paint Job - Update Post From Archives (56k Users Beware)

Post by bweight »

Well, here goes again.. lol.. Anyways, I have more work done on the paintjob.. The black stripe has been painted around the white and you'll see it in the latter of the pictures. I've also included other pics of various parts which are undergoing a facelift as well as a pic of the bike in its current state.... (it's nekked)

Here's what the concept of the paint job is:

Loosely based off this:

And now onto some more pics, this time with the white graphic painted on.....

Tank Cover once again:

And now, for the latest pics.. Including the black painted in stripe.. What a PAIN in the ass to mask this up.. took 4 hours.. sprayed 2 coats in a half hour, then removed all the masking to reveal this... (Oh, sorry bout the mess in the garage.. Haven't had the opportunity to "spring clean" it yet):

Little touchups to do here and there. Unfortunately I don't have pics of the LHS Fairing as it's still at my dad's place in the garage.. When we were lifting the masking off of it, some of the red paint lifted in a couple of places and needs a touchup.. I don't know why it did, but, well it did.. :(

And finally, here's the last few updated pics of different parts and the bike itself in its current state:

Thanks guys for the compliments.. I'm by no means a pro.. I am extremely pleased at how things came out though, but now as I told Haunter on MSN, I'm stuck with something.. I don't know what color to paint the wheels. I've got one stock white rear and a black front replacement for the one I smashed up.. And I'm just stuck. I cannot determine which way to go.. Any ideas?

1 vote for white. It offsets the red pretty well. Kinda flows with the tribal striping too. I think black would just be inconspicuous. ;)

The black brought every thing together nice and it looks great! I think I would also go with the white wheels if it were my bike I would like great since you have alot more white than black in your paint.

why not have 1 black and 1 white rim, matches up with your paint work, you could put a red rim stripe on each to bring them in with the red of the body work ????? canofworms

Nice work with the body. What did you use to paint the headers and subframe?

As for wheels, id say go black with red or white lips.

Thanks..

Subframe I just sprayed Duplicolor flat-black truck, van & suv paint out of a can.. nothing major. just that we sandblasted it and I wanted to cover up the rust..

The headers, I sprayed on Duplicolor high heat paint with Ceramic.. supposedly can withstand 1200 degrees F... I've heard mixed results.. but it's the cheapest way to do it so I did it.

Post an update on how that header paint stands up. I gotta repaint mine and not sure what to use exactly.

And what about the plastics? I've a few scratches that I'd like to get rid of, and since all the plastics are off right now, I figured I might just try to do a new paint scheme... :shocker I've access to an air-gun, but my buddy said he can do wonders with a rattle can from Dupont. I figured I might let him try, then just take it to the professional place if it doesn't work out.

Mega - I'll definitely update on the headers.. According to the can, the paint doesn't truly cure until it's subjected to the heat from the Exhaust itself.. So once I get it fired up, I'll run it for a few minutes anyways and see if it "reacts".. It may take some time to get any bearing on how it's gonna be but I'll let you know one way or the other..

94fzrconvert - The panels were done at my old man's place in his garage.. I was originally going to do it at my place, but it was still rather cool out at night when I started and my garage doesn't have proper heating and insulation yet.. I used PPG Automotive Paint from a local auto body supply store. We setup a makeshift spray booth in his garage with tarps at one end, and on the other side of the garage we had a 3' x 3' fan blowing air out through the window to remove the overspray and ventillate. It worked out pretty good for us..

Just a few words of warning... This shit is TOXIC... we could not breathe at all without the use of respirators.. If you don't have a respirator, then do not spray this stuff. Even with rattle cans, if you're going to use alot of it, make sure you're not breathing that stuff straight in..

And as for your garage/shed/booth.. if you're spraying indoors.. You're going to have overspray land on just about everything.. Especially using a gun and compressor. My dad's cool with it, so even though parts of his floor have a nice red tinge to them, he wasn't pissed.. We just shrugged it off... Besides, he owed me one after closing the garage door on my '05 Tundra in the winter... Left a nice mark on the tailgate.. :D
