Airtech Tail w/ 03 R6 Undertail Photos

Since there is no wrong way to install the Airtech tail, I figured I would show how mine is installed.

If you remember, I chopped the rear of the tail and added a R6 Undertail. The undertail is easily removed via 4 screws. I did this so the tail light would attach easier and look like it was stock.

Anyhow, the photos will show that I have an electronics mess under there. You'll be able to see where I mounted my Voltage Regulator as well.

I beefed up the underneath of the airtech tail since it was cracking through the top. I simply added welded mess wire and more fiberglass cloth/resin. I can take a photo of that later - if requested. It did add some weight, but it was necessary.

I purchased a bag of rebar caps (orange) from Home Depot. I added them to the back. It was a bit of trail and error. I used threaded rod since I wasn't sure how long I was going to need to make them. It supports the back very well. My 80lb 10 yr old can sit on it without any problems. Course, she would probably slide right off...

For the seat, you will see that I removed the 2 rubber bumpers from the back. I put in more threaded rod and the seat sits over the threaded rods pieces. It makes me push the seat in toward the front of the bike before these will fit onto the rod. It's perfect. People would probably think it is locked down. I realize that the seat will not last forever doing this, so I'm looking for alternatives. Might add some type of metal insert or something later.

What did you do with the stock wireing, is it just thrown in under the seat or did you do some fabrication? By the way that seat and color combination looks awesome

Yeah, I have all the wires tied together and they're fairly long because I need to attached them while sliding the tail in. They just tuck into the space under the seat. I just removed by brake reservoir out of there, so there is even more room under there.

Looks great makes the bike look way more up to date! Just two questions how much fab was there to do on this swap? And I see your over flow bottle was moved is this some thing you have to do with this swap?

There was a lot of trial and error. It was my first time with fiberglass and bondo, so that was an experience... but not difficult - just more time consuming.

Yes, the overflow cannot remain in the back. You have to do a substantial amount of cutting metal off. Many things will have to get moved, especially electronics. Notice where I mounted my VR (Voltage Regulator).

I currently have my overflow under the gas tank, but will put it under the seat once I get some longer hose. It was temporarily mounted to the side of the frame cause the weather was nice and I was ready to ride!

You can see in last photo, in my initial post, where I added more fiberglass to strengthen up the tail inside. I was cracking on top when I receive it. I bought it used off of eBay.

In these next photos, they show some orange caps (rebar caps) that I bought from Home Depot to push the tail higher in the air and hold it there. Works perfectly.

They don't necessarily screw into the seat, but the threads do hold it on. I push the seat forward, slide it down on them, then let go and the force from the seat pushing back onto them holds them on - really well in fact. I need to beef those up so they don't wear out. Not sure what type of plastic that is though.

It looks great totaly gives the bike a face lift that is for sure. If I had any time with fiberglass at all I would give it a try.

That is one mod my lady would not let me do for sure, Kick I think she would sell the bike while I was out if it only had the one seat LOL2

Alright Rage, If youre ever in MS, I owe you a beer... or 3. I followed your lead and just finished my install this morning. However you figured to use rebar caps is beyond me but I dont think anything could have worked better. I did the same thing you did with the threaded rod for holding the seat down. Works great. Only thing I screwed up was I never thought about removing the rear tab on the seat. I actually got the whole thing to work with the tab but man was it hard to get on and off. I kinda screwed the tail up a little making that work. I eneded up coming back to this thread and saw you cut yours. I was like DUH! So, even though I cut too much out of the tail in the seat area, a couple zip ties did the trick. Notice the bracket I used to kinda put the VR off in space! I dont think I'll have any problems with it there. By the way, the tail is glassed over with an 03 R1 integrated light. I havent quite figured out why I cant get the blinkers to work. That'll come later. I never use em anyway. Here's some picks:

Hey racedigital, that is the cleanest subframe and tail I have ever seen on an FZR. Makes me want to go gut mine and paint it . Great job on the tail by the way.
