These are some pics of what I use.

Canon 5D (~$2K when I got it)

16-35 2.8L (~$1500)

70-200 2.8L (~$1200)

50mm 1.8($90) Don't be fooled by the price. This lens is a must have and takes very crisp pictures. It's just a plastic housing and can't take any abuse or mistakes.

580EX ($450)

Most of the gear I got a deal on but I did pay retail for the 16-35mm. It hurt but man do I love that lens. A good set of filters is key too. I use a B&W polarizing filter on the 16-35 and tiffen on the others. Still need to upgrade the 70-200 filter to a B&W. You can spend all the cash on the lens and then get a crappy filter and ruin it all.

Canon ran an ad once that said, "How important is a lens? Gee, it's only the thing you look through." I used to buy the knock off brand lenses. Once I used some of the high end Canon's I couldn't go back. The difference really was night and day.

And that flash has more options than I know what to do with. I try and avoid using a flash if at all possible, but that puppy does rock. However, anytime a flash comes with a freaking LCD screen, it also comes with a manual that's way too thick. Luckily I can run it on full auto and it knows what lens is on the camera and where it's zoomed to and adjusts the flash power accordingly. Some day I'll learn to use it but it'll take a class or two to do it and remember it.

Not a bad price for a D40, but I don't know if I would recommend a D40 to anyone who thinks they might want to do anything more than snap shots with the kit lens. The lack of an autofocus servo in the camera limits your lens selection to AF-S lenses (and uber-pricey AF-I lenses IIRC)

Canon 55-250mm f/4-5.6 (I haven't really used this one yet, but when I do its pretty good)

Canon Rebel XS with kit lens 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (Very slow lens and will be the first thing I upgrade after I really know what I am doing)

I still need to invest in some filters and hoods too. I guess a real camera bag wouldn't hurt either.

TK, the metering mode helped a lot. I started messing with that in manual mode and have got better results.

That 18-55mm kit lens shouldn't focus slowly unless you're in low light or something is dirty.

Its not bad. Just sometimes when in good lighting I will try to focus in on a subject (with manual focus point) and it will focus then unfocus. It might happen a few times.

...Or it's probably user error...

my new powershot that ran me 130 bucks cuz it was out of stock everywhere online and I had to go to a walmart to get it

its major failing point is 4x optical zoom, which I knew would be a problem. But I couldnt convince the wife to let me spend the extra 80 to get the SX110 and get 10X instead :ermm:

takes decent pictures, but nothing as full and colorful and the stuff you guys posted.
Plus I'm getting into how it really works to mess with stuff, cuz with bright sun it was hard to get it not to be washed out, and sadly I forgot my tripod in Carlsbad Caverns so I had to go higher ISO and shorter exposure so the pics came out dirty from there

haunter, it doesn't look like that camera has a treaded barrel, but you might still look into seeing if you can get a circular polarizer that will fit. They're pretty cheap and they can really improve colors in direct sunlight. it's like a pair of sunglasses for your camera. in fact, i've even seen people use a pair of polarized shades in a pinch.
