DSLR's and Stuff

Post by slayermd »

I don't know what caused me to do it. I think it was combination of my sucky cell phone camera and relying on my video camera to take pictures. Or maybe it was I wanted to get all creative and maybe make something will mean something to the person looking at it. Either way and 870 bucks later, I now have a Canon Rebel Xs.

So, Im going to whore out what I have done so far with it real quick. (I didn't take the last two, that was my girlfriend)

Who here likes taking pictures? What is your set-up? Post some pictures.

Body-Canon Rebel Xs (already have over 1000 clicks on it in the week I've had it)
Lens-Canon 10-55mm
Lens-Canon 55-250mm

I'm still a newb at all this so my equipment list isn't all that great.

I suspect TK probably has the nicest setup here...

I've got a Nikon D40, 18-55mm, 55-200mm, 50mm f/1.8.

I've thought about a new body, or switching to a Canon setup; but really I think I just need to get out and shoot more.

Heh, I don't know about that. Although my goal is to make a living doing it so I did drop some coin.

Canon 5D, 16-35mm 2.8L, 70-200mm 2.8L, 50mm 1.8, and a 28-135mm kit lens. Also have a 580EX flash and some filters. I probably shoot my 16-35 the most though. I love that lens.

I probably use the kit 18-35 most, but the 50mm f/1.8 is fun too. Only problem is that the D40 lacks the drive motor to auto-focus that lens.

Oh I do love the 50 but I usually only use it for people and I don't get to shoot enough of those.

I'm without a camera right now. Been using the wife's Rebel XTi when I need to shoot. My last DSLR was a 20D and I'm waiting till the 40Ds drop. I need something that will run lights.

The hardest thing to gauge is the DOF (Depth of Field). Some of the newer cameras allow you to preview the DOF, but it's still a little difficult to tell. Since higher ISOs are much better than ever, raising your ISO to get a deeper DOF is usually best. You can always blur the image later through PS, but sharpening is another story.

Most expensive lens I had was my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS... $1600 for that lens. I also had the 1.4x converter.

I actually shot some of my best with the original Rebel and 70-200mm f/4 lens. Here are some sample shots from back then with various lenses:

Nice pictures Rage. One thing I have wanted to do but haven't had a chance yet was to shot live action shots of people/animals. There was one instance where a cat posed for me in a field, here is the pic.

My Xs has that DOF preview but I still haven't used it probably because I don't fully understand how the preview works. Also, one thing I have had problems with is having my pictures come out too dark even when in sunlight.

The camera should have 3 metering modes. Spot weighted, center weighted, and average. If you're shooting a dark subject and a bright background on average (usually comes set to this) you'll get what you are describing. Try using difference settings. That or you can focus in on the cat and take a reading and lock in the f/stop and aperture using the asterik button, then recompose and shoot.

I love to take pics. I just need a better camera and one that I can really zoom in with. Post some pics of the actual camera's used. And what do you suggest?

Mark - with a DSLR, a 20D can be had for minor coin ($300). However, it's the lenses that are just as important and they can cost from $100 to several thousand... The nice Canon lenses they use at football games are in the $8k range - don't drop them.

I would suggest a 70-200mm f/4l lens ($450) and a nice wide angle - but they can be costly. Use the kit lens 18-55mm till you learn the in's and out's of the camera before tossing that much coin...
