Valve opens, gas and air come in through valve, piston comes up, spark plug sparks and ignites gas and air, explosion pushes piston down, exhaust exits through other valve.

Rinse, Repeat

  • Suck
  • Push
  • Bang
  • Blow
Now go back and watch it again....There is a reason why we have such a harmonic balance with our lovely machines

It isn't really an explosion as it is a "Controlled Burn" the video does a good job depicting the burn.

If you have an explosion you have Detonation and that is an undesirable burn
If it ignites before it's suppose to then you have Preignition also an undesirable burn

Ideally you will have a spark that sets the compressed air/fuel mixture on fire and it is a smooth and even burn of the mixture.

Yamaha_George can probably give a in depth explanation but the concept is the same for all internal combustion engines. Rotary engines are an entirely different contraption.
