I'm very lost!

Hi guys, i'm sure your hear this a lot but decided to buy my first "real" bike which is a '92/'93(You know what, i can't even remember!) FZR600. I did't really plan on buying a bike tbh but i got offered it dirt cheap and couldnt say no, however, im starting to see why it was so cheap lol. The jist of it is, it starts and idles as long as the choke is on, but if i turn the choke off it dies. also if i so much as touch the the throttle it dies. I've worked on cars for the past 5 or so years and pretty competent in terms of car mechanics however i've never touched a bike before so im not really sure where to start, I changed the spark plugs and the old ones appeared to be soaked in fuel bar 1, might have been cylinder 2 or 3. Did a lot of reading on here and had a crack at taking the carbs apart, which took me a long time due to 12 of the 16 float bowl screws stripping! But yea, i have no idea whats going on in there however i did notice inside the float bowl of cylinder 4 was pretty dry and slightly dirty compared with the other but i couldnt see any blockages or anything. Was going to do a compression test but i didnt have an adapter small enough for the bike but if i need to get one then so be it.

Did you get the jets out and clean them as well? It would be tough to see blockage in them with out taking them all the way out. I had to buy an adapter for a compression test. It should be a 10 mm adapter that fits Honda civics. Hope that helps. You are on the right path.

Thanks for the info. Been at it all day, attempting to set float heights, bench syncing(was told it was well off when i got it), mixture screw setting and cleaning.

Just done the cleaning and the tiny wee jets(idle jets?) were a bit clogged on cylinder 3 and 4. Cleaned em up till the hole appeared clear and put the carbs back on to see if it made a difference and it runs off choke now but wont rev past about 3k rpm. So i went about setting the float heights and made the cheeky wee credit card "tool" and it appeared my floats were set well too low(~18mm) so i've set them to around 22mm now and drilling the tamper proof caps off the mixture screws so i can have a crack at them too. Can carbs be that badly set up that it could make the bike run so poorly?

Its more than likely that somewhere in all the tubes you cant see there will be some petrol thats gone solid and is blocking something up. If I was in your shoes I would take the carbs off in one big lump. Take the diaphragms out. Then give the rest to someone with an ultrasonic carb cleaning bath. Do this before you make any adjustments. What you are doing is probably trying to make up for a couple of blocked pilot jets or emulsion tubes. Get em cleaned and try them again - then start adjusting them!

well im learning the more im looking at them, had a wee look at everything and it seems honky dorey, it's wierd it sounds like its revving really high but the rev counters only showing 3k rpm, its bogging down big style when you give it full throttle and its stinking of fuel so i guess i need to sort out a way to lean it out a wee bit, sounds miles healthier now though.

I'll sort a pic out when its in a more presentable state, i've never even seen it in one piece! I bought it with the fairings off and the tank cover off etc so it'll be a first for me too!
