I past my test late last yr and had a kawasaki zzr600 i have now switched to the yamaha fzr600, i have a nice looking 1997 american import on 3hh, its totally different to my old zzr and at high rpm it goes lovely, my 1st question is under 3500 rpm it judders a luttle and is not happy above this its smooth and quick, is this normall? The clutch cable i pretty much at its full adjsutment, still freeplay in so think is ok but also its clunky into 2nd again is this normal, i have replaced all fluids, oil and spark plugs and air filter, it has a little over 20k on clock, double braided hoses and scorpion end can, any other help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi danny,
The FZR600 engines are known to be loud when changing gear. I still find from 1st to 2nd a clunky action but its just the almost bomb proof gearbox they put on the bikes. As for low down, they are high reving bikes so it will struggle a little at low end, if you have checked everything then it should be fine. Check your chain is not too loose or even tight but apart from that, its normal for the bike.

Bombproof as in 2nd gear is a bomb :whistle

You will find plenty of spares repairs yammy 600's on ebay with no second gear.......

The selector forks can bend and teeth can crunch if you are over abusive with the box. Good semi synth oil changed every 4-5k should help stop this though. Like chrisFZR600r says, these bikes aren't made for poodling and will run best higher up the rev range. When I had mine it didn't feel right low down and it was a couple of tight links in the chain! It had stood for 6 years before I got it though :duh:

You could try backing off the clutch cable, then adjust the screw under the plastic tab on the sprocket cover so its 1/4 turn off the clutch rod. Then retake up the slack in the cable. You never know that might help alot.

Chris

Yes the fzr is fairly temperamental in the low rpm's but it's normal, do try to get the hang of it quick though because letting it jump and jitter (for lack of a better term) isn't to nice in the chain, gearbox, sprocket, ect. I do believe that anyone who can ride a fzr smoothly can probably ride about anything "Its all in the clutch control" .

 I'm going to take that as a compliment. I aparently can handle anything!

it took me a little while to get used to the bobble at low RPMs but after i learned how to adjust the clutch to more of my liking and control it better it is nice and smooth. at first i thought that it was my carbs out of sync but after putting a gauge on the carbs found they were in sync and clean figured the same thing out about it being better at high rpms

As a couple of the others have said, the low RPM judder is normal for these bikes. I bought my '89 with just under 3000 miles on it and it exhibited the same issue. So yeah, even when they were new, this was a quirk to contend with.
