How many miles is too many?

Looking to pick up an FZR for my brother in law. I'm a cruiser guy and don't know much about these sport bikes.
For an FZR 600, what is the expected life of the engine? I know "it depends", but I'm just looking for an idea. For instance, I saw a 1996 with 35k miles. Is that good? Should I expect a lot of overhaul work?
Thanks.

It's all semantic. I think 35k is high for a 96. But it all depends I who had it. How well they took care of it. It depends on the price they are asking too. I bought my 95 with 3k for 1600 and I feel I paid too much.
Chris.

Hi,
As you say Chris depends on the owner, mine had about 12K and i paid 600UKP and the owner was known to the guy who told me about it. The engine was in top shape good compression and valves set correctly for a 16 year old bike it was in pristine condition.

They are asking $1500 which is below the NADA listed value for a "good" condition bike.

I personally think the NADA and KBB and Edmonds are all garbage when it comes to putting value on a bike. Lots of factors that they don't take into consideration. But 1500 for a bike with 35k is way too much. I'd be surprised if it met the "good" condition. Assuming it had all fairings and no damage to speak of I'd pay no more than 1000. It depends on the market though. If the pickings are slim in that price range for your area it may be a good deal. If there are a lot of older bikes to pick from then you have more room to negotiate.
There are plenty of lower mile motors out there and motor swaps aren't hard but its never fun to buy something and have to swap the motor right away. If the motor has been well cared for, 35k isn't bad as far as miles go. I've seen articles with Japanese motors torn apart with 65k miles on them and all the internal bearing measurements were within .002"
However, the FZR is usually bought by new riders so the motor may have been beaten. It's hard to tell.

Thanks. That's the perspective I was hoping to find here. I'll haggle a bit.
