i was looking on ebay last night for tires and came across a guy selling a used shinko podium for $10.00 USD up for bid. the manufacture date was (5303) 53 week of 2003 idk if any one knows this or not but i will put it out and i will try and find some where else to put it but tires have a shelf life. 6 YEARS SHELF OR ON CAR. http://www.wisebread.com/are-your-new-t ... time-bombs go to this link please. it explains i work on trailers and we replace them at 4 years! some people try and sell 12 year old tires. if you dont know how to read the code it is THE FIRST 2 NUMBERS are the WEEK and the second 2 are the year (FOR ANYTHING AFTER 03) before 2000 the first 2 are the week and the last one is the year...(531) was made in the 53 week of 1991. please dont by anything older than 3 years at 4 they have seen failure. at 6 its not IF but WHEN. I have seen too many people go down for somthing stupid lets not let that happen to any one we know.

Eh, while it's nice to know when the tires were made there is so much that affects its safety. I run summer and winter tires on my car. Each are probably 5-6 years old. Will I be replacing them anytime soon? Nope. But I also check them for bubbles, tread, cracking, etc.

Now on my bike, I replace the tires every 3 seasons usually as I've killed the back tire by then. Tires are also more of a concern to me on my bike. Still, I wouldn't go running back to where ever I bought the tires if they date of manufacture was a year or two ago.

Overall it's good info to have. I'm a bit jaded as at one of my jobs I have people that break their shit and then bring it back demanding new or that it's a manufacturer issue and they didn't do anything to it. Articles like the one linked to just give those people more ability to not take responsibility for their actions.

Sure if a shop sells me 6 year old tires as new I'd be taking them back, but if I have 4 year old tires and one blows, I'm not instantly going to think it's the tires fault for being old. Driving habits, construction zones, debris in the road, garage parked or driveway, there are just too man things that affect a tire to really pinpoint it.

That is true people do break things and then not take responsibility for it. And i am the same way if i have had them on the care for 3 years and all the sudden they blow then its my fault for not checking them regular. But i found a guy selling a tire on ebay as "new never mounted" and mentioned it was old inventory. I wouldnt mount a 9 year old tire on anything. Why take the chance.

I wouldn't risk it. Don't like Shinko tyres much either. Had some on an EX500 and they were shockingly poor even when newly manufactured. The article is correct though in Europe we are warned about the dangers of old tyres. All the tyre places I have been to have posters up explaining the age of the tyre and the danger of old tyres.
