I would have killed for a tool like that in the 80's, my second RD400 (82) i filled the barrels with a cloth (to stop any contact), then filed the exhaust ports lowering them, i couldn't get the file into the inlet, or transfer ports, so they stayed intact. I also had a spare set of carbs, RD250 and RD400 share the same carbs an obvious bottle neck for the 400, i couldn't afford the amal carbs, so in my madness i placed a large round file in a vice, threaded the carb body over, then set to work i filed the diameter to an extra 2mm, making sure i didn't totally remove where the throttle slider's slide (idle speed issue). Cleared the jet orifices, and re jetted can't remember what size, i fitted modified Kawasaki 900 bell mouths. The carbs alone added so much more low end power and 8 mph top end. There's no carb sync on the RD400 there's a balance tube between both inlet boots. The only draw back, a rear tyre lasted around 1000 miles, I wouldn't even attempt such a thing now, but back in the day it was the obvious solution they where spares so i had nothing to lose, ah to be young and rash again. I also done the 2 base gasket, no head gasket trick that was in a mag at the time, took forever to lap the heads to the barrels with grinding paste, and i didn't even notice any difference. If i had a 2 stroke and a compressor to drive those tools, they would be on the credit card :)

Don't even think about filing carbs out, you will render them scrap metal!

As you say those were the days, I still have 9 RD 400's (sad or what) your Dad did not teach you how to bend files then :-} Riffler files come pre-bent but are so fine toothed I just bought standard rat tails and bent them and re-tempered.
I had a mate back then who was a dentist which is how come I got the drill (some Lo-life broke in to the surgery and the boss put down an extra drill as missing so he got a new one and I parted with some cash for the old one.;-}

Blue Streak( a very rude word in Japanese)

is with most of my bikes as you can see in the picture back in the west indies, only Green Bean has gone the way of all bikes. Yellow Peril is morphed from the remains of Green Bean here in the UK.
