Helmet saved my life
I can finally say it. Yesterday I had a nasty fall off my motocross bike. Hit my head on the ground pretty hard. Heard my neck, skull and helmet crack. Pain - almost black-out. Shoulder sore today, light headache will probably last a few days, lots of advil. HJC helmet now a garage decoration. Glad to be alive. Wow. If pain continues more than a few days I guess I'll get an MRI.

Re: Helmet saved my life
I have to add that my Shoei Helmet saved my life 20+ years ago, getting T-boned by a drunk driver. EMT's at the scene said without a doubt my helmet saved my life, as it was cracked in 2 pieces. Living here in New Hampshire (no helmet law) It makes me shiver when I see people with no protection (shorts - t-shirts and no helmet) stunting and speeding around. When you do come off the bike you'll be glad you have that layer of protection. I think it's almost an inevitable fact that your head and hands will contact the ground. Glad to hear your OK.

Might as well get checked out just to make sure. Glad to here you made it with out too many bumps and bruises.
My Icon helmet has three distinct scratch marks from my head bouncing off the road when I went down. Defiantly saved me from looking any worse than I normally do. Not to mention the skull/brain damage that probably would have occurred.

Yes, that is a Single Sided Swingarm FZR600 that I built.

Re: Helmet saved my life
Thanks for the support guys, I really appreciate it. Yeah, I'm not feeling too good, feeling progressively retarded (oh boy, more than usual!) Will call the doc soon. Body feels like I went a round with Mike Tyson too. I can't imagine how bad it would have been without gear. Shoulder is bruised to the bone, part on skin almost looks like wasp sting. Neck and back are stiff / sore, especially neck.
Oh yeah, I remember what happened. Put it this way, way too much throttle at the wrong time and a lot of "unexpected traction" = airborne + up-over + down hard! head + shoulder first.

you seethat stiff neck bit GO SEE A DOCTOR, I have a pal who is now quadrapleagic because he had a bad tumble of an MX jump woke up after 2 normal but bruised days to find his stiff neck was broke and moved in the night and was "lucky" to be still breathing next morning.
I do want to hear about that from your family OK !!
Re: Helmet saved my life
Very glad to hear you're alright.. Which brings me to one thing that never seems to boggle my mind.. I don't know of anywhere else, but in the US, why don't you guys have any laws Country wide that require helmets?
Here in Canada it's mandatory and I'll tell you if it weren't for that, I wouldn't be here today either. I'm just surprised my helmet didn't shatter when I hit the pavement, but I'm also thankful that it didn't either..
Take the time and get checked out man.. You never know if there's anything broken..

Re: Helmet saved my life
Thanks George, I took your advice. I went to the Emergency room last night, was there quite late, got 4 x-rays and they said they only found what appeared to be remnants from my old surfing accident when I was 19. That and the doctor said that my cervical spine looks pretty bad for someone my age. Well, I have abused my body pretty bad since the age of 5. (plus been in too many car accidents)
Anyway, I scheduled an MRI for later today, and will call the referrerd Neurologist later today to schedule a follow-up appointment with him. Hopefully they won't find anything and I can just heal up. Am still sore and stiff and bruised as hell, as well as the "lightning" skull headaches (like a ballpeen hammer and nail). But made it to work with LOTS of ibuprofen.
Truly, thanks again and I'll keep you posted.
P.S. - I hate needles, I hate them in my arm, I hate them anywhere, I hate them hanging from a tube, I hate them sticking in my ass, I hate needles yes I do, I hate needles YAM I am.

I hate needles too, had my fair share in the military for sure, glad so far that you are just bruised, if you are taking ibuprofen, do not use caffine drinks (tea, coffee, coke etc), plain water is best keep the body well hydrated
(the old soldiers trick is to see that your P is clear not yellow tinged then you are up to scratch water wise . )

Good to hear you are still alive!
You will most likely have that stiff back for a bit. Go get a message with a happy ending, that'll clear things up
No helmet law here. Most people in my town wear a tank top, shorts, flip flops and no helmet. It just makes no sense at all
