Now: decision time! What color? The wheels and handgrips are red. I was thinking of adding a little more red here and there such as levers, pegs and assorted pieces interspersed occasionally. My question is---how stupid/awesome would the frame and swingarm look coated red? I'm leaning towards going with black or a dark blue, especially after seeing the bike in Cali that guy F-ed up. The fairings are all black so I was also thinking maybe go with the black frame and just add color to the plastics. I don't want my bike looking too "fill in the blank" when it's done. I really don't want to have to do anything to the wheels other than cleaning them up. I'm sure he'd coat them as well but I would have to have them dismounted and then mounted, balanced etc. Don't want to get into that if I don't have to.

Looking for all the input I can get!

Red can look good if done right......



Black is a standard. Flat black is easy. Gloss black will take wiping down constantly as it shows every fingerprint.

I don't believe I've ever seen a dark blue frame. You could also do a gunmetal frame. Gunmetal and red go well together.

Personally I'd pull the tires if he's willing to do the wheels. You'll spend between 60-80 to do each if you were to go to a shop. Pay 60 for the unmount/mount and balance and have them done. Specially if you are trying to match anything. Reds are very different and there isn't a way to paint match a powder. There are a lot of companies that make red powder and you'd have to find the one that matches your wheel. In the long run you'll be happier.

Black and silver or gunmetal frames are the easy to work with. You can then simply paint the fairings, wheels and other items without having to remove the engine each time you want a change.

Personally, I think that unless you're doing some wild custom thing, don't go with a color outside of greys for the frame.

I could not do it on a Perimeter frame but all my tube frames were a singularly bright orange and became my signature as such for my custom bikes .
Darrin's advice is sound because when yuo sell it on at some point it looks stock(ish) wild paint is nice for you but as you see in another thread there are few who think like the individual that is you.

After some careful consideration I'm definately leaning towards having the wheels coated as well-if he'll do them. Might as well do it right the first time. (although my favorite toolbox sticker is "we do it half-ass the first time")

There was a guy a while back who did his frame and swinger in white. I thought it looked great. It may have been over on the Archives.

If there is a powder out there that mimics gun barrel blueing, I think that would look badass.

If I did that I'd be too tempted to strap my shotgun to it and go driving down the highway like Delonte West. However that would be an interesting way for me to show up at the hunting cabin for deer season.

UPDATE: It's been nearly three months and I haven't been contacted by the guy to do the coating. Searched around my area and found a shop to blast and coat my frame and swingarm matte black for $125!!! I think it's a good price so we'll see what the finished product looks like. Taking it in probably monday and should take 2-3 days. It's acepowdercoating.com if anyones interested who lives in NE Ohio. I'll try to put up some pics when it's done.

Everyone knows I have a bit of a red anodize fetish and like the black/red scheme, and if there's one thing Ive learned, is that it doesnt like sunlight or heat. Even sitting under a cover, most of my red has turned pink. I used to have several different shades of red, but theyve all kinda faded the same . Im slowly going through and powdercoating the red parts so they will hold their color and be more durable. Then again, most of my black anodize is turning gold now too...Its a real PITA.
