Ok I finally got my bike out of the shop.
I go to DMV to get my registration. I'm in so cal and i purchased this bike in Arizona.
1. DMV needs to check my VIN, ok done and verified.
2. DMV needs to check my engine serial, ok done and verified.
3. DMV says I need a sticker stating it's street legal. Where the heck am i supposed to get one of these?? what is it for? my bike looks street legal to me, with signal lights and street tires and fairing. do i need smog?? DMV says my mechanic should know but i checked with my mechanic and nothing.
89 FZR400
Thanks!

some states require an inspection done.

Well, the unfortunate part is that you're in California. You might need a mechanic to check to make sure the exup system is attached and working. You might also need an emissions test done as I think Calli does this on motorcycles. You might also need to have a State Patrol conduct an inspection to make sure it has all of the safety items that are suppose to be present on the bike. Things like turn signals, headlights, tail lights, brakes. And that those items all work properly.
PM Sweekster, he'll know better since he lives there too.

I think you need an emissions inspection and the sticker usually goes on your fork tube.

That's great I need all these stuff. Where am I supposed to get all these stuff checked to get my sticker? My mechanic doesn't know as it's just a place to fix motorcycles and not a inspection place.
My bike isn't a Exup.
I'm in So Cal. I was thinking about the CHP HWY Patrol??

Yep, your local CHiP is the best place to start. They should be able to tell you if there are other things you need to do as well.
The problem with the bike not having the exup valve is that you live in a state where the bike was only sold if it had the valve to begin with. Since California does emissions testing (I think) on bikes, this could pose a problem for you. I just don't know enough about the bullshit CARB rules to be able to tell you one way or another. However, if Arizona does emissions testing as well then you're probably in the clear.
Like I said before, PM Sweekster. He'll know what you have to do.

Sweekster (Duane) is usually in the CHAT room during the day. I'm sure he can point you in the right direction.

yeah inspection sounds about right, and its just about guaranteed that you'll need to have a smog test done. i still can't believe here in arizona they make you get a smog test EVERY year on most bikes

Blimey. The only test my bike endures for emissions or smog, is a visual one! Provided it's not belching out great gouts of smoke, it passes!

i would imagine my bike being 88 it should be exempt from any smog test.
FAT, mean, and rude DMV lady said I can't see a CHP officer unless I go through DMV. Then DMV will make an appointment with me seeing a CHP officer.
does this sound about right?

Ride fast enough during rush hour and you should be able to get an appointment pretty quick.

updated info for today.
i had some extra time in the afternoon and just dabbled into the DMV
this time i got some guy and he just checked my VIN and Engine number and that was it. no checking for stickers or anything of that sort. i got my plates and 2009 year sticker.
What's up with that 1st lady trying to get rude with me? is she a lesbo and hates guys or what.
i don't know what's up with DMV folks but people obviously need them to get whatever vehicle done by them and they act all stuck up and rude and $hit. almost like cops.

ehh somtimes thats just how shit goes ... Every office in every state of every country will have one or two employees that might be new or just hard up about doing things by the books and in turn will give u a hassle about somthing that could be done in a couple of minutes .. You did best thing by trying the DMV again because somtimes u just walk in expecting the same hassle but walk out a happy camper with tags and legaly able to ride on the street .. Now go ride the shit outta that back
