Registering my FZR250 in the US

Does anyone know how I can get my 250 registered over here? I just got it running right and now want to make it legal. I live in the Detroit are and according to the Secretary of States website I have all kinds of red tape to cut through (customs certificate, NHTSA approval, and EPA approval). Does anyone else have a way around all this? Surely someone else has titled an imported bike without going through the bureacracy.

Cheers,
Brant

Go to your local tag office and talk with them.

All of us here at the forum can inspect it..... if you would post some pics!

There are two ways that I know of as I've looked into it myself for a VFR400. First and easiest is, where did you get the bike from? If you bought it in Canada and it was registered there, it should be easier as we have an open trade agreement with them. You will still have to jump through a lot of hoops though. The second way is you need to find a Registered Imported (RI) that will deal in motorcycles. Take it to them, they will need to do a few things to it to meet EPA requirements but they should fill out all the paper work and everything. Then you will have to have the bike bonded for the value of the bike (meaning if it is valued at $2500 you will have to have a bond for $2500 for it). Then there is the insurance issue as not all of them will insure the bike. But, the first place to start is the DMV like Mark said. They should be able to give you some info on the states procedure.

This is what has to be done in Georgia. You might get lucky being in Michigan though.

Also, post up some pictures of it. We love pictures around here.

I guy I worked with at a dealership outside of Boston used a Dealership sticker to cover up the "not for highway use" part on the title for a 500 Gama and it worked..Another way is register it as an enduro, in some states you can run a 2 stroke dirt bike on the road as long as it has a mirror, head and brake lights and a horn..I would try the enduro way myself..Good luck

I have done this in the past:

I got 5 bikes from Japan all "Illegal" two strokes like TZR'sand such.

Then I brought them in as race bikes only.

sent a seperate box and put the lights back on.

So then I went to my local DMV with a few receipts in hand for parts and said I made the bike myself out of parts.

You are allowed to make a bike, have it inspected and register it if it meets the requirements of your state.

Find a custom bike builder in yur area and ask him how he does it.

try that.

Oh yeah what year is it? Most states grnadfather in bikes over 20-25 years generally so the EPA rules need not apply.

I bring in 1960 era side cars all the time from China to the USA and the EPA rules don't apply to them so I know this is a true statement.
