have to go with a buddy after work to possible buy a 97 cbr600F3 with a hong kong steven stars full body kit. i looked at on the way home yesterday for him, ya know walk around it once and leave.
in my 30 second inspection i noticed oem pipe was cut down (prob stunted)
front tire was unsafe to ride and totaly bald. (said it comes with a new one)
chain and sprockets were stock yet and all rusted and worn teeth (needs replaced)
frame has rust on all the welds around the steering neck (just surface rust nothing major, bike had a life out side)
front upper is not lining up with side fairings (either upper stay is bent or hong kong body kit is off)
rash on foot pegs on both sides (its been down prob reason for all new body kit)
brake and clutch lever are snapped 1/2 way off (crash on either side)
new grips and chrom bar ends. i belive my bud said hes asking $2000. i said do not pay more then $1700 as is since it needs about $300 to bring it up to snuff and a safe riding machine (has 30K miles and i am sure valves were never checked since it's chain and sprockets are worn the heck out.
any motor problems to look for? let me know asap. we are taking my rear stand and lifting it off the ground to check trueness of rims and rotors.
its gonna be his 1st sportbike upgrading from a 95 HD 883 sporter. he loves the style and realizes he dont need a liter bike for a 1st bike finaly after i talked some sence into him. atleast he wants me to come check it out good and ride it for him so i wanna try and get him somthing mechanical sound, cosmetics we can fix over winter.

From the sound of it, this bike has been abused. I would not offer over $1200 at this time of year.
That's going to need a full resto to get the frame back into shape. That's a lot of time and money.
Also, you're not going to be able to tell engine issues unless you do the valve checks, etc... Take it for a long ride and beat the crap out of it to see where the issues are: clutch slipping, gear slippage, 2nd gear issues, smoke, etc...
Also, look at the oil and see how clean it is.

i am trying to find out what the asking price is. the frame i can get power coated for about 275 max, blasted and coateding in gloss black. he wants the badly, its a sharp looking F3 but just needs a TLC.

good plan, but i'm still with the others in saying you can find a much better deal this time of year, he just has to be patient and watch CL like a hawk.

maybe check with the CBR forum goons and see if there are any common problems with the F3, like the VR going to hell on the FZR.

indication of being used for off-road hill-climbs?

GOOD IDEA
I wouldn't advise a real friend to get a bike like that, i don't care how cash-poor the guy is. that bike sounds like a turd. same sprockets it came with and 30,000 miles ????????
Hey... and the CBR forum... just remember, you gotta give to live. Life is what you make it. Due to most Honda's reliability, you find a lot more long-mileage riders there than guys who know much about wrenching. Just the nature of the beast. They do have a "General Tech" section though, probably answered more than the specific-bike sections.
