What to do?
So, after getting my FZR400 frame I got a little hesitant about doing the swap. I don't know if it will mess up the handling (this is for a race bike) and maybe other things. The reason I want to do one is because the bike has a F3 rear wheel and the tire can (and has) rub against the brake arm if the tire is out of adjustment. Other then that, everything fits fine. So should I do a little more work and go with the swap or keep the OEM swinger?

personally i think that is where the swap came from .. the track riders .. they wanted a better variety of tires and what not and i think we the ppl just took it to the streets , i believe majority of track riders swap out their front and rear ends just to seee what works better for them and what might give them that slight advantage to use on the track .. me i did it more for the appearence and less for performance because i know i wont push my bike too or past its limits on the street .thats y i run a 180-55 on a 5 inch wheel even though ppl say your not suppose to ..i wasnt supposed to have sex with my wife before the wedding day either but cmon now ... . had i known that you cant polish a yzf swingarm before i actually bought one i would have gone a differnt route maybe a nice braced 400 swingarm.. i love those , im sure everyone else does alsoslayermd wrote:So, after getting my FZR400 frame I got a little hesitant about doing the swap. Well, I voted yes. But I'm really into swapping things lately. Lets look at this from another angle. You said this is for a track bike. Is the bike only for the track or is one you ride to the track then use it there as well? How competitive are you? Are you looking to just have fun or get a little serious with it? Reason I'm asking is that if you do start competing, depending on the class your in you may not qualify because of the swap. Most have started allowing the switch to 17" rims, you just need to find out which ones are acceptable. Another aspect is the are the tires. If you are competitive, you need to keep this area in mind. There are what, only two tire choices out there for the 18" stock rim in any kind of race trim rubber. I think if you really look at what you want to do with it, the you will answer your self.

I say leave it.If you are already using the cbr F3 rim then you already have a 17" wheel therefore you also have your choice of rubber to use.By switching the swinger out you still will only putting a 5" wide rim on it which is the same as the F3 wheel.

Well, after sizing the wheel up I found out that without a bunch of spacers it wont fit. Even with one 1 1/2 inch spacer and a half inch spacer there still a ton of room. Ill have pics in like 2 hours of the spacing and Ill see what you guys think of it.
It is an Honda F3 wheel, so Im just thinking this really isnt the wheel to swap with.

The set up...
The right side. Thats the biggest spacer I have.

i would try adding more spacers or find a machine shop and see if they can machine one to fit, for a decent price of course. it will still be cheaper and easier then doing a swingarm swap.

Find a 88-89 FZR1000 swingarm... they're lighter and not as wide as the YZF swingarms.

yeah the F3 wheel can be made to fit in the stock 4/6 swinger

I'd stick with the 400 swinger. The YZF will fractionally increase wheelbase (I think) which won't help with flickability on a track bike, and while a slightly fatter rear tyre has its own advantages, it also makes it a ouch harder to lay the bike in, especially if the front hasn't been matched to suit.

If the brake stabiliser bar is rubbing on the tyre , you replace it with a stay bar that does not.
Take a look at:-

Look specifically at my rod that I made with two rose joints to handle the fact that it will not be on a straight line. Bolt one end to the outside of the caliper bracket (where the original was ) and bolt the other end to the outside of the lug on the swing arm use s/steel bolts and aero type nuts double locked as I have done and you will be fine.
Total cost maybe as high as 40 bucks and the tyre will be at least the thickness of the lug from the tyre. Nerd
