The dogs are worn out. These are the tabs that connect a sliding gear to a fixed gear. 2nd gear is the one most prone to wear because people wind-up first gear then miss the shift and you slowly wear the dogs down until they dont engage or disengage...You need to split the cases to do any trans work....I would move on unless its a super cheap deal $200 max!!!! my2cents

I've always been told that popping out of second is a good sign that the motor has been raced or stunted; as such there is probably more sh!t going bad than just 2nd.

How much truth there is to that I don't know.

Its not a bad problem to fix. We have done a couple in class but splitting the cases and all those parts have to put back together. banghead LOL If you have the time and are not in a big hurry to get it going its a fun little project.

Like haunter said, get the Factory Pro shift kit. It was one of the best upgrades i ever did for my fzr. Not saying it will cure a full blown problem, but i used to miss 1-2 alot. The FP kit really cut down on that.

+1 on the good link, i didn't have a clue how a bike tranny worked. before it was the scary thing hanging off the arse-end of my motor.
