cold air intake

I've been thinking about it for a while and came to the conclusion that it would be ugly and obtrusive. so i did it. I wanted to get totally fresh cold air in so i essentially made an airbox which exits the right side of the tank. i'm nearing completion and have been taking pictures so i'll post when i'm done. please don't tell me how ugly you think it will be because i already know and don't care. hopefully it will give me plenty of fresh cold air.

Just don't try to any sort of ram air setup. The carbs require there to be vacuum behind the the throttle plate to function. If you start shoving air into the airbox, it's not going to work right. I found this out on my '82 Honda Sabre.
For the CAI to make any difference, you will need to adjust the carbs in the rich direction. Fuel injected cars compensate automatically because they have oxygen sensors. You will be slightly more lean with a denser air charge.

Hi,
pity I did not know you were doing this . I saw an FZR4 (twin headlight UK model) with scoops at the front of the tanks so it fed to the original snorkel on the airbox I would imagine.
Unfortunately by the time I retrieved the camera from Madam the guy was gone

Function before form my friend. You have to know it will work before you can make it pretty (but you knew that already).

Just making sure. It's something that didn't occur to me when I first started on the project but I eventually figured out. Too bad too because it looked pretty bad ass. I wish I was motivated enough to work on that bike again.

Holy crap ... totally Mad Max!
And even better than it works great, nice job.
Also... what does the Ford coil pack do and how does it increase performance ? (perhaps this is already somewhere explained in the Wiki and I am not seeing it ?)
Also, is there any disadvantage to installing it ? Does it get in the way of the stock airbox ?

thanks a lot man. The coil packs have a larger secondary voltage so stronger, hotter spark. You can gap your plugs wider, but i haven't. it should be good for cold starts, and it seems to have improved my mileage... and I don't know i never had it in the with the stock airbox. I think you could probably get it in there... it's not too much bigger than the old ones but I'm not positive.

I gotta admit, I was skeptical but who am I not to encourage customization? I think it turned out well.

M,
well I guess i know your favourite colour :-}
Neat looking job , but puzzled as to the two extra "guages " on the tank.
Glad that it actually works thro the rev range, How close is that pod to your knee as you may get fume splash on your leathers although you should be protected from that by the long PVC tube.
Once you have used the system for a while may I suggest you do it in alloy or stainless as a fire hazzard precaution.

george, the tank gauges are his speedo and tach, i believe i saw them in one of his other threads.
pretty monstrous machine, but i love it! absolutely a one off, great job on the intake maverick.

hey thanks guys.

yeah those are the stock speedo and tach. plus i have a sigma on the bar, and a radar detector up front. on my way to school this morning i found a dead spot right about 5800-6000rpm. right at highway speed...

above or below it goes like hell... hopefully it's a bit lean so i can jet it up a bit more. I'm already at 128 mains with a stage three jet kit.
