Do I Need A Wiring Harness

Post by pearsonbe »

I have a bike in rough shape. It sat for years and runs now. But none of the lights come on when the ignition switch is turned on. The only thing electrical that works in the insrument cluster is the temp guage. The headlight only works when the switch is on Hi. The tail turn signals are missing. I don't know whether the front turn signals work properly. They are off the bike.

Which lights are supposed to be on when the ignition is on or the bike is running? Is the wiring harness one piece?

It is a 91 600.

Basically, all the lights are supposed to be on, except the rear turn signals (the front turn signals should have running lights). When your low beam doesn't turn on, check to make sure that the bulb isn't just faulty. Had that happen to me, low beam didn't work but high beam did. Put in a new bulb and both worked.
As for your gauge cluster, check the wires leading up to it for current. If there is than your tachometer could have fried, along with all the cluster lights. Replace lights if necessary.

Thanks. There was voltage on the brown wires at the tach and temp guage. But the reading was all over the place. May have been been a bad ground with my meter. I will check again. I have read on the forum that these bikes have short lived voltage regulators. If it died and fried the tach, it makes sense that the bulbs are dead too. I will check those as well.

Pulled eight bulbs and I could see that five were dead. I want to replace them all. From searhcing the forum, I know #194 automotive will work for the big bulbs. But I'm not sure about the size for the small speedo bulb. I thought I saw #74 somewhere.

The tachometer does not work and now I know why. I looks like the resistor (R7), betwwen the two blue components, is fried. I checked locally, but have had no luck finding a shop that will replace it. I live in Hanover, Md. Can someone provide a source? Is there anyone on the forum willing to repair it at a reasonable price? I'd rather give it to someone that is good at working with electronics. If not, I will give it a try.
