Spelling and grammar?

Post by Kevadlilleke »

For readability, could some of the board members start using punctuation and stop using one-letter acronyms (y, u, etc.) instead of words? Right now some of the newer posts are really hard to read and even though I could maybe propose a solution to the poster's problem, I've instead closed the post after reading it 3 times and still not understanding where one sentence ends and another one begins.

I can understand that we can't always spell correctly and some of us are not native English speakers (not even me), but punctuation and full words would go a long way.

Hi,
yes i can relate to that, but also consider using "white space" to break up the various point being made

I agree 100%. It's amazing to me how many non-native English speakers have a better grasp on English vocabulary and grammar than some of the native speakers you run into. I think it comes down to laziness more than anything else though...

It's the texting generation and I'm afraid it's only going to get worse.

In another forum I'm a part of (audiclub.ee), simple rules, like proper capitalisation, punctuation and full words are actually enforced by forum moderators. For first two erroneous posts you get notified of the rules and consequences, third time revokes your posting rights until you acknowledge the rules and ask for the rights to be restored.

Hey, I suck at writing! I really do. I feel like I can't say what I really want by typing. But, I agree 100% I have trouble understanding half the things people are trying to say.

Well if truth were to be told any better I don't know how, this is the reason partially that texting has made conversational "english" worse. So has the North American motto "no child left behind" initiative having lowered expectations to the point that high school grads are illiterate and everyone passes whether they're reading level is at grade 1 or not even that high.

End of rant I'm sorry but I wanted to say it out loud.

hi,
that is the truth, back in the early 90's i went to back to college ( @ just under 50 years old) to confirm my knowledge of software writing and hopefully add to my skills..
What i found out was that the college ONLY got paid for people who passed the govt standard exams, The day before the exams we were run thro a"mock" exam then it was gone thro with detailed answers on the chalk board .
When i turned up the real exam was in the same room and the questions were IDENTICAL to the mock and ODDLY the perfect answers were still on the chalk board.

The outcome was I passed with a distinction (I would have done anyway, since i was helping the lecturer to learn coding) but guys who were there whose daddy had sent them despite their best efforts at goofing off passed as well.

5 years later i was lecturing on IT at a prominent local college and had some immigrant smart a*se who spoke jargon but had no understanding what so ever of the basic concepts & constructs of IT hand me a term assignment that still had the original copyright on it where the stupid idiot had downloaded it from the internet IE> not even clued up enough to edit it even slightly.

I put a thick red line thro every page & marked it FAILED.
Lo and behold when picking students for my advanced course this muppet turns up so politely i said no since you have failed the beginners course. Seems he had appealed and had my decision overturned..

Money for a bum on a seat, which went VERY sour as he blagged a job with our biggest sponsor and local IT company in 3 days he was fired for 5G's worth of physical damage to the equipment he was supposed to look after. The company wrote me a nasty letter telling me they were withdrawing sponsorship and they would NEVER hire another student from the college.

When i took it to the education board at the college they just shrugged and said so...........
I quit at the end of the year and promptly tripled my salary by Lecturing for an IT player.

Now we have 25% unemployment locally I wonder why?

My experience with all paid education is that if your tuition checks clear, you pass.

That's 100% of the problem with MMI mechanics

Seriously, though...

in this lies the answer/tactic.

It's up to each of us, here and in real life, to be intolerant of this kind of thing....

Make it socially unacceptable....connote that it is a bad thing/sign of stupidity to behave in such a way.

If we could get girls to uphold real standards of speech and written communication..then this war would be won.....

Those who commit such blatant laziness and lack of respect for their readers would find that the fear would be upon that they will not get laid until they can express themselves well.

Spell check is your friend boy's & girl's.

That texting crap is creating a generation of illiterate & ignorant punks that are incapable of communicating properly.

I always thought that "English" class being a requirement for so many years was ridiculous. Obviously I was wrong.

What is more disturbing, is that those same kids are supposed to be our future. “We are like totally effed, dude!”

One more side note: full words make the search function behave quite a bit better.

Unfortunately, spell check does not prevent correctly spelled yet improperly selected words from being posted. Was that an ironic case in point, or a deliberate example?
