setting the bead on a tire

Post by megaloxana »

My buddy needed help putting on a tire for his boat trailer yesterday so I told him to come over to use my air compressor. We messed with the tire for an hour or so but couldn't get the bead to set on the rim. My buddy then mentioned something about his farmer cousins using ETHER to pop the beads on their tractor tires. I didn't believe this at all when he told me..but I did have a can of starter fluid laying around from the potato gun and im quite a pyro. So i continued on by spraying the inside of the tire and since we werent sure what was gonna happen, we stuck a few leaves on the end of a stick and lit leaves. BAM! the tire instantly pops to life and the bead is set. I was absolutely amazed that this actually worked. So yeah..i dunno if you guys ever heard of this method but I thought I'd share.

Hi,
HMM i can see the need for huge tractor tyres but boat trailer tyres?

On bike we use soap on the beads if you use washing up liquid do NOT use it on alloy rims it will corrode the rim.

their were fancy spanish alloy rims for dirt bikes and I am sure most of you know MX tyres are a bitch to wrestle on so the guys used washing up liquid.
Yup easy peesy BUt 5 year + on the tyre man broke the rims they had rotted !

Thats an old farmers trick alright. My Uncle used to do that for the tractor tires. Worked every time.

It's a good one while you are 4 wheeling too. If the air compressor someone has doesn't do it, that usually will. It's a last resort sort of thing though. It's the not the safest way to go.

man be really careful because you would be surprised at how many ppl have died doing that. Too much ether or gas and she blows or bounces off the ground and hits someone. I've seen 4 fingers broken on my uncles right hand doing from doing that with a car tire.

The moral of this story, tommyj27 needs to build an ether-powered spud gun! :hijack:
