Recently bought a voltage regulator from Luckybike which I thought would be an OEM voltage regulator. However upon receiving it I can't tell if it's an OEM or some aftermarket knock off. Can someone help ID this?

I don't know what kind of bike your have. Year wise. But that's like one off an r6 which would be an upgrade. If you want to be sure you can go to bikebandit.com and do a part number search.

Yup I have a 94 FZR600 with the crappy stock VRR that recently went bad. I'm upgrading to the 5-pin design using the TTR adapter harness. The problem is I ended up buying this VRR from Luckybike through Amazon. They had the OEM part number there and the picture looks like the OEM one but now that I have it in hand I'm doubting that this is an original OEM unit. It didn't come in Yamaha packaging and I'm wondering if this is OK to use or if I should return it. There's plenty of stories of aftermarket units burning out quickly. Just wondering if anyone can ID this unit and confirm whether it is OEM or at least a quality unit and not a cheap knock off.

Hi,
that was made in Taiwan so not likely to be Yamaha ! That said the one picture you do not show is the terminal block.
Does your plug look to fit ?

Y-Geo says it looks like the type of VR from an R* series yamaha, with its heavy cast fins.
Depending on cost we say use it if it was cheap enough if not send it back and get an R1/R6

Here is the product page link http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VKIX7S/.

It is an R6 voltage regulator for use with this harness http://www.ttrignition.com/vrr-upgrades.html.

Looking at pics on ebay it looks like the OEM part is in fact made in Japan. What do you guys think use it or lose it?

I see no indication of it being an OEM part on the seller's page - he says pretty clearly that it just "replaces OEM Part # 4JH-81960-01-00".

It's a bit expensive for an aftermarket replacement, though. If you can return it without losing more than $10, then certainly do that. Otherwise, not that big of a deal, IMHO, just plan on replacing it again in two years or so...
