leaving for 2 years
there comes a time in every mans life and military men more than most where it is time to leave your beloved motorcycle behind you and answer the real call to duty. i leave this Friday morning to head to japan for 2 years and will be gone out to sea most of the time so didn't see the need to try and bother with the hassle of bringing my bike over to have a few days of ridding in the 2 years i am there. instead i have elected to bring it to a good friend of mines house and have him pretty much tear it down to frame and rebuild it including checking the wires to make sure they are still good. probably do the yzf600 swap with the engine and the swing arm and r6 shock conversion. i found a neat place to get a complete new set of fairings for her. i goggled fzr600 r1 conversion and it brought me here. http://www.airtech-streamlining.com/yam ... ersion.htm i love the way it looks just not too big of a fan of the way it looks with the single head light on it. but trying to figure out what all i want to do to her and what you guys suggest. i know i am not going to get the power of a r6 or anything just love the fact that i have a unique looking bike that there aren't a lot of running around town unlike the r6 and gsxr600 that you see in every parking lot. i went on base today and there were 9 R6's in a line.

I wish you the best. I don't believe Japan is anything to be feared, but the neighbors next door (China) are people I certainly don't trust.
There are several people here that have either full or partial airtech fairings on their FZRs. It does update the look and with it being fiberglass, it is much easier to repair than ABS.

Good luck out there. Thanks for keeping me free. We'll pray there are no more tsunamis. See if you can't find someone to let you ride their fzr out there. And then look for cheap parts you can smuggle back over.

oh trust me i am going to be looking for parts that i can get back here some how some way just wish i could ship a full bike back over here that would be great or ride mine in the mountains up there talk about love

i like the way it looks. the lines are great but dont like the single headlight. it looks unbalanced with it offset like that. but if it had 2 lights and a rear seat insted of the race tail i would love it. but on other note i on my 3rd day in japan now and have already got to see a fzr here in japan and want one

UPDATE: tear down has started. he sent me pictures the engine is out and broke down for the most part. just waiting on the service manual to get there so that he can continue to break it down and get messurements and tell me what all i need. i cant wait to get home and have her put back together just wish that i was there for the whole process but what can you do. i think i have decided to stay away from the swing arm swap. but i am going to do the r6 shock. he is going to port the head for me while it is apart. will keep pix updated when i get them.

Hope things are going good for you over there. I have the airtech fairings on my bike and love the look! The PO had put them on probably 8-10 years ago and still look good. If my wife rode with me i wouldnt like the single seat, but she doesn't ride so I like it. Still trying to find a headlight for it though.

so i kinda have a parts list together for now of what we know that i need at the moment. oil control rings, con rod bearings, main bearings, oil seal, complete gasket kit, the other things i am going to do are replace the clutch and all body work is trash so going all sides. right now i have a list of about 1500 if i can re use my cylinders if not that is another 500. but i need a service manual to pull the crank does any one have one?

so decided not to do just a rebuild going to do the 660 build. i already have the head complete with cams and everything for $92 jugs w/pistons for $57 chain tension-er for $30 going to be ordering new wrist pin retainer clips, piston rings, gasket kit, con rod bearings, and thermostat all of that is going to run me roughly $450 from www.partzilla.com so not too bad. less than 600 in the engine. then i am going to get the clutch rebuild kit for $140 then new shift forks, drum, rod, and chain and sprocket change. R6 shock, SS2R slip on. thought about doing to yzf swing arm but i can already fit a 150 on the fzr swingarm and i dont mind the way it looks with the 18" rim. plus dennis kirk has pretty good deals on battle axe bt14s so all in all idk if it is worth the extra time and money into it. if there is any one that can tell me that performance wise it is a good deal then i will consider it.
